Your Favorite Cartoon Characters’ Baby Pictures

Everyone loves a good cartoon flashback, eh? You know the ones where we’re briefly privy to our favorite characters’ lives as babies. Of course, some of these cartoons’ younger selves have become increasingly familiar through series like Tiny Toon Adventures and Muppet Babies, but we’re not complaining; we loved us some Muppet Babies. After the jump, we’ve gathered childhood snapshots of 25 popular cartoon characters and stuck ‘em in faux picture frames, just to keep it classy. Oh and since it’s tough to choose between a young Ned Flanders and a young Mr. Burns, a few TV shows will appear more than once. Give them a look, and hit the comments to add photos from other cartoon characters’ fictional scrapbooks. … Read More

The Future, as Predicted by '90s Cartoons

Remember those flash-forward episodes of your favorite ’90s cartoons? Y’know, the ones that showed the characters’ lives a couple decades down the road, living amongst hover cars and flying by jet packs? Well, we recently realized something mind-boggling — we’re currently living in the same time as most of those über-futuristic cartoon sequences. When a psychic showed Lisa Simpson her fate, we learned that robot employees would be commonplace in 2010. When the Rocko’s Modern Life gang traveled in time, we found a land of rocket cars and “transportators” in 2013. Needless to say, we’re a little behind. Click through for a blast from the past, a sneak peek at the future, and a lesson in what our modern world should be by now, according to ’90s cartoons. … Read More

Matchmaking for TV Teens: 9 Fictional Couples We’d Like to See

Is your boyfriend in love with his cousin? Are you in love with your neighbor? Is your neighbor in love with a jerk? Are you a cartoon? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you might be a lovelorn teenage character on a TV series. When we brought you our favorite ’90s teen power couples, we neglected to mention the best friends, classmates, ex-lovers, and siblings of these perfect couples — the characters who, more often than not, are majorly lacking in the love department. This phenomenon is typically blamed on awkwardness, fickleness, or ugly duckling syndrome, but what if these misfits’ true TV match is just on another series? With Valentine’s Day less than a month away, we’re pairing lonely teenage TV characters with other lonely TV characters. Some are from current shows, others are from yesteryear, but all deserve a little more love than they receive. Check out the matches we’ve made after the jump, then hit the comments to recommend others. It’s pretty fun. … Read More

10 Cartoons Inspired by Live-Action Characters (or Real People)

[Editor’s note: While your Flavorwire editors take a much-needed holiday break, we’ll spend the next two weekends revisiting some of our most popular features of the year. This post was originally published October 7, 2011.] Cartoon creators don’t always borrow personalities from live action film and TV, but when they do, it sometimes isn’t as obvious as we’d think. Have you ever noticed that Milhouse is a flawless animated rendition of The Wonder Years’ Paul Pfeiffer? And Doug Funnie’s retired neighbor? Y’know, that Dink guy who hangs around giving Doug strange advice? He’s most certainly an homage to Home Improvement‘s Mr. Wilson, the wisest man on the other side of Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor’s fence. Check out some quirky cartoons and their live equivalents after the jump, and hit the comments to let us know the others you’ve found. They’re everywhere. … Read More

TV's Most Memorable Pets

Pets are a staple of almost every television household, making for trusty sidekicks, dependable comic relief, and comforting ears that (usually) don’t talk back. But some on-screen animal stars are more than just housemates, with affable personalities and plot lines of their own. The inspiring owner-pet relationships that we celebrate after the jump establish a real equity and rapport between cross-species co-stars and make us reevaluate a pet’s role in the home. Which of your favorite actors yield from the animal kingdom? … Read More

10 Totally Slammin’ TV Bands from the ’90s

There’s no denying that ’90s television was chock-full of dope fictional bands, and it’s about time we cranked up our nostalgia and got jiggy with the fake musical groups of yesteryear. Some were boy bands, others were punks, but most just settled into their oversize, unwashed flannel shirts with some bangin’ alt-rock vibes. Remember that time Little Pete and meter-man Mel formed the Blowholes? Or when Doug and Skeeter ran into the Beets at the Honker Burger? What about that time Jordan Catalano, like, serenaded Angela Chase with that song written about her hair, or something? …Not! (Hold up, did we even use that right? It’s been a while.) Regardless, check out some totally fake ’90s TV bands after the jump, home-skillets. They’ve missed you. … Read More

10 Comical Superhero Alter Egos from TV

There’s something particularly enjoyable about the awkward superhero equivalents of our favorite, otherwise unheroic TV characters. These alter egos’ bizarre get-ups and peculiar antics are often so far removed from their shows’ realities that we can’t help but chuckle. But, then again — why wouldn’t Conan O’Brien’s tall, beefy superhero cartoon use an oven mitt and a jai alai glove to save a school bus? And of course Jack Donaghy’s animated superhero self would use his powers to taunt a nine-year-old Brian Williams. Regardless of the strange “gifts” these TV characters might instill in their fictional superhuman equivalents, we’d still feel safe with Super Ray or the occasional Quailman patrolling our neighborhood. Check out some makeshift masks, capes, kitchenware, and tighty-whiteys after the jump. … Read More
