We’re constantly fascinated with the creative process here at Flavorwire, and one of the most important components of that process is the space in which it takes place. For musicians, at least as far as the recording process goes, this place is the studio, and as such we thought we’d take a look at the studios of some of our favorite musicians. The contrasts on display are intriguing, from the endearingly chaotic to the pristine and very expensive, from analog to digital, from minimalist to decked out in all sorts of crazy-looking… Read More

The Most Gloriously Absurd Lyrics in Hip Hop History
Juggalos rejoice! The new Insane Clown Posse album is finally out this week — it was due earlier this year, but record company wrangling resulted in its release date being pushed until the end of summer. Of course, beyond their selective appeal to Faygo devotees, ICP are largely known to the general public because of the immortal couplets from their 2009 single “Miracles,” which will go down in history as one of the most ridiculous and somehow awesome songs ever made. In celebration of their new record, then, here’s a selection of the most gloriously awesome lyrics that hip hop has given the world. Your suggestions are of course welcome. (And just to pre-empt any of the accusations that have a magical way of appearing in our comments section every time we say anything remotely negative about hip hop: we’ve done this before for ’80s pop songs and we’ll most likely do it for other genres in due course. So there.) … Read More
Hypotheticals: The NWA Reunion Album
Here at Flavorwire, we love to engage in what Marcellus Wallace called “contemplating the ifs” — imagining a pop culture landscape filled with movies that never happened, adaptations that never came to pass, and performances that were not to be. In “Hypotheticals,” our new, semi-regular feature, we hone in on a single project that never was (a film, a television show, an album, a book, anything really) and explain why it went away, and what we might’ve missed. Today: a look at the long-promised, never-delivered N.W.A. reunion album. … Read More
20 Albums We Can’t Believe Are 20 Years Old
Yesterday, Slanted and Enchanted, the debut album from alt-rock legends Pavement, turned 20 years old. Wait, we can hear you saying to your computer screen, already? Yep, it came out in 1992. Now, we don’t know about you, but the realization that one of our favorite albums of all-time officially has two decades under its belt makes us feel super old. Not that this is the first time something like this has happened — last year, we freaked out over a handful of films that we told ourselves couldn’t possibly be ten years old already, and we’ve only just gotten over that shock. But time marches on irrepressibly, so if you’re in the mood to realize just how long it’s been since you first heard of Dr. Dre, click through to read our list of 20 albums we really can’t believe are 20 years old already. … Read More

The Morning’s Top 5 Pop Culture Stories
1. Apparently Tupac’s hologram might be headed out on tour. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a close source to Dr. Dre says that he and Snoop Dogg are seriously considering it: “One option would be a tour in stadiums, involving other hip-hop stars, including Eminem, 50 Cent, and Wiz Khalifa. Photo Highlights from Coachella 2012
Weekend one of Coachella — the unofficial kick-off of the summer music festival season — has come and gone with the requisite reports of drug-fueled crazy dancers and #coachellaproblems. But the big news from the concert grounds seems to be that headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg were joined on stage by a hologram version of Tupac Shakur, who then proceeded to rap “2 of Americaz Most Wanted” along with Snoop; Radiohead’s two-hour set was totally packed, but worth fighting the crowds to see; and the celebrity-watching opportunities were even more fruitful than they normally are. (Who would have thought David Hasselhoff even know what Coachella was?) Click through our photo gallery to check out shots from some of the weekend’s best performances, and if you were there, be sure to let us know what you thought in the comments. … Read More
