H.P. Lovecraft’s ‘The Tomb’ Illustrated as a Dr. Seuss Book

Around this time last year, a DeviantART user who goes by the handle DrFaustusAU wowed us with his illustrated mashups of Dr. Seuss and “The Call of Cthulhu.” Thanks to a post over on io9, we just discovered that the artist has returned to the H.P. Lovecraft well, this time creating a wonderful adaptation of one of horror master’s earliest stories, “The Tomb.” Is the tale of a dreamy boy who is obsessed with a mausoleum only to end up institutionalized in a “refuge for the demented” as an adult? Probably not. But that’s what makes it so much fun! Click through to preview the first few pages, and then head over to DeviantART to view DrFaustusAU’s epic work in progress — he’s only got five pages left to go. … Read More

Watch Your Favorite TV Characters Talking About Books

If you’ve been paying attention to this space over the last couple of months, you already know that we’re fascinated by the reading habits of our favorite fictional characters. But what’s better than a simple reading list? A little informed dialogue, of course. Or even a few well-placed snarky comments. Recently, we spotted this excellent clip of The Wire‘s D’Angelo talking about The Great Gatsby over at Open Culture, and it inspired us to round up a few more clips of some of our favorite TV characters waxing poetic about their favorite (or least favorite) books. From simple proclamations of Dr. Seuss’s brilliance to Boardwalk Empire‘s very physical commentary on David Copperfield, we love seeing books we love figure into the drama. 20 Famous Bow Tie Lovers

We didn’t think it was possible to like Bill Nye the Science Guy more than we already did. After watching a video featuring the educator and Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick getting a lesson in the art of the bow tie, however, we can wholeheartedly profess our eternal love for all things Nye and necktie. The Disney/PBS children’s show host — a frequent wearer of bow ties — advises Hardwick to “dress the knot, snuggify, pull it tightical, and pay attentiontivity to the bow tieical” in order to properly sport the iconic accessory.

The bow tie has a long history of living around the necks of individuals who weren’t afraid to buck trends and make a statement. Donning a bow tie is a polite defiance by a dapper rebel. We’ve rounded up a list of famous, enthusiastic wearers below who deserve a round of applause. Chime in with your favorites below. … Read More

10 Important Life Lessons We Learned from Children’s Books

This week, one of our favorite children’s book authors and illustrators of all time, Chris Van Allsburg, turned 63. Allsburg’s books were formative literature for us as children, so to celebrate the author’s birthday, we were inspired to think about all the life lessons we learned from children’s books — both picture books and early chapter books — that still stick with us. After all, the things you absorb at a young age can form the foundation for the person you will become, so we think it’s nice to look back and see if we can trace our morality to an evil French dentist and his dog. Click through for some of the life lessons we learned from our favorite children’s books — and let us know which morals you’ve held onto in the comments. … Read More

‘Star Wars’ as a Dr. Seuss Book

Reimagining classic sci-fi stories as Dr. Seuss might have written and illustrated them is officially a thing. Last year, DeviantART’s DrFaustusAU brought us a Seussian version of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu, and has gone on to make similar illustrations for Ghostbusters and more. And now, Retronaut points us to cartoonist Adam Watson’s similar project, in which he applies Dr. Seuss’ whimsically surreal style to such characters as Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and Jabba the Hut in a series of Star Wars-based images. Unsurprisingly, the translation works well; Yoda was basically born to talk in rhyme. See the series after the jump, and follow Watson’s work at his blog. … Read More

Everyday Words That Were Invented by Famous Authors

The English language is ever-evolving, and in our current era of instant communication, Twitter, and text-message shorthand, it just might be evolving more quickly than ever. We’ve always been fascinated by the way words are invented and take on meaning, and the way an obscure reference can become ubiquitous in an extremely short period of time — particularly those obscure references that come from our favorite manipulators of language, books. In the interest of pursuing that idea, we decided to take a look at a few everyday words that originated in literature, from plays to poems to novels to children’s books. Click through to see our a few of our favorite literary neologisms, and if you feel the urge, add to our highly incomplete list with your own favorites. … Read More
