What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we almost projectile vomited over a concept photo for real skin stiletto heel implants. We made mental note of TIME’s Halloween costumes that everyone should avoid this year. We were excited to see that Faile is the next artist taking over the Bowery mural space — it will be a nice change of pace from JR. We learned how much money Paula Deen really makes, and for doing what. We wondered who at H&M thought it was a good idea to launch a line of clothes inspired by Lisbeth Salander. We thought it was totally creepy that Muammar Gaddafi had “Libya’s best composer” write Condoleeza Rice a love song, and that it was called “Black Flower in the White House.” We were happy to hear that the lovely Kerry Washington has landed the female lead in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. And finally, we wondered how George Lucas feels about Steven Spielberg’s recent interview with Empire Magazine; even though Spielberg refers to Lucas as his best friend, he also totally throws him under the bus for how much Kingdom of the Crystal Skull sucked.

Our 10 Favorite Female Graffiti Writers

13

Yesterday we reported on Theodora Richards’ brush with the law, an incident in which she was apprehended for writing graffiti. Historically the medium has been male dominated, so in appreciation of Richards’ efforts, we compiled a list of her predecessors — our ten favorite female graffiti artists from around the world. Though it’s doubtful tagging “TNA” (which she was arrested for) will ever earn her a spot on this list, it’s nice to know she’s trying, even if those attempts end with a court date. Check out our ten favorite female graffiti writers after the jump.

Daily Dose Pick: FAILE

4

A collaborative of Brooklyn-based multimedia artists, FAILE has been creating art with a mix of found visual imagery and cultural iconography for over a decade.

In Bedtime Stories, their first New York gallery show in three years, Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller present 12 new works assembled from printed wooden blocks arranged into what look like patchwork paintings. Initially inspired by the process of quilt-making, the playful mix of pin-up girls, cryptic text fragments, and pop-culture icons like the Tin Man and Mao Zedong makes for frenetic eye candy with a strong narrative — like fragments of a vivid dream.

Pic of the Day: The Underbelly Project

1

The Underbelly Project is an art exhibition featuring work from 103 street artists from around the world — ranging from established names like Ron English and Swoon to up and comers like Noh J Coley — housed in an abandoned New York City subway station. It is essentially the equivalent of buried treasure.

While the gallery space is not open to the public (and in fact, the entrance has since been removed), the New York Times got a two and half tour of the location on the condition that any details that would help identify the site not be published. “We do want to preserve the kind of sacred quality of the place but we also want people to know it exists,” explained one of the show’s curators, a street artist who goes by PAC. “And we want it to become part of the folklore of the urban art scene.”Luckily, the Times reporter wasn’t the only one to document this brief underground show. Click through for a selection of photos of the project that were shot by Luna Park, and read her first-hand account of the strange experience here.

Exclusive: Redefining Urban Art at the Auction House

4

Since the early ’90s we’ve seen the emergence of what some have been calling “outsider” and “urban” art — artists who used the street as their canvas and non-traditional mediums as their tools, but weren’t practicing what we’d normally title graffiti. On April 25th the work of many of these artists (including Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, KAWS, Mike Giant, FAILE, Banksy, Neck Face, and many more) will be featured at Phillips De Pury auction house in their Saturday@Phillips series. We caught up with Ken Miller (auction art consultant, ex-editor in chief of Tokion Magazine, and publisher of Revisionaries: A Decade of Art in Tokion) and Alex Smith (auction curator and Contemporary and Urban Art Specialist at Phillips de Pury & Co.) so we can get an insider’s point of view on the rise and relevance of this movement.
