The Flavorpill 50 is a collection of the top venues in NYC and LA (with Chicago and San Francisco to follow). Each spot has been picked by our staff for its consistent contributions to the cultural landscape, and its ability to set the bar high and keep it there.

In New York, we’ve got everyone from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Mercury Lounge on board. Last night we celebrated the program with a launch party at the New Museum, which was sponsored by HobNob Wines, Stoli Vodka, and Magic Hat Brewing Company.

Recap: The Lowbrow Reader Variety Hour at Housing Works

In honor of Manhattan comedy journal The Lowbrow Reader’s new issue, Housing Works Bookstore hosted The Lowbrow Reader Variety Hour last night. Variety was indeed the key: the event featured musical performances, a reading, and a comedy routine.

The evening commenced with oddball musician Peter Stampfel and the Ether Frolic Mob. The farcical performance of the eponymous Stampfel, who howled and grimaced comically while playing souring notes throughout the set, made one wonder if Christopher Guest was filming a sequel for A Mighty Wind from somewhere in the back. Having recently celebrated the completion of its fifth presenting season, LA’s REDCAT has turned what could have been a fate as red-headed stepchild of the Walt Disney Concert Hall and forged its own distinct identity, firmly rooted in a search for new language and forms. In an economic environment that is increasingly challenging for the exploration of new work, the annual New Original Works Festival (kicking off a three-week run on July 23) provides a much-needed platform where risk is encouraged and new languages are privileged.
