Some of TV's Oldest High Schoolers

Earlier today Gleeks ’round the world white knuckled their Broadway playbills when it was announced that at the end of the coming season, Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith will be graduating from McKinley High School and leaving the show. On one hand, it will be sad to see three of the series’ most iconic characters depart — and at the same time, to boot. On the other, we agree with Glee creator Ryan Murphy, who recently said that he didn’t want the show to be populated with characters that “were in high school for eight years.” High school dramas have always had their fair share of actors in their 20s — and many of them were already at that age when they first landed their gigs. After the jump, we’ll look at some of television’s oldest high school students. Be sure to add anyone who we’ve missed in the comments. … Read More

10 TV Shows That Started Out Great But Went Bad

If you happened to be paying attention to Twitter around 11pm Sunday night, then it won’t be a surprise to you that viewers were tremendously frustrated with the way the first season of AMC’s The Killing ended. Although initially among the most promising new series of the year, it’s been trying audiences’ patience with its sloppy story line and poor character development for several episodes. In fact, when Nina Shen Rastogi at Slate graphed critics’ assessments as the season progressed, she discovered a pronounced downward trend. The Killing‘s precipitous plummet got us thinking about other shows that started out great but eventually lost steam. Our list of ten TV series that went bad is after the jump. … Read More

TV’s Best Same-Sex Teen Romances

Gay TV characters are nothing new; they’ve been around for nearly 40 years. But it’s only in the past decade or so that we’ve seen a lot of queer teenagers on television. Now that the tide of public opinion is turning in favor of LGBT rights, it seems like every teen drama has a gay character. We have to imagine that this is a big deal for real-life gay, lesbian, a and bisexual kids, who are finally seeing themselves and their relationships represented in popular culture. In celebration of Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, we’ve put together a list of our favorite same-sex teen romances on TV. Tell us who we missed in the comments. … Read More

10 Satisfyingly Grumpy TV Characters

Ah, summer. For all its good qualities — the sunshine, the free concerts, the easily obtained popsicles — it does have its downsides. Read: notoriously limited TV options. And strangely, we’ve found that what we’ve really been missing isn’t the intrigue, the musical numbers or even our favorite heroes, but all the witty one liners and cranky back talk of all our favorite TV grumps. Granted, it may be more efficient just to have Ed O’Neill move in with us, but since that’s not an option (call us, Ed!), we’ve created this little roundup. Click through for our list of some of our favorite grouchy, sarcastic and ornery TV characters of all time, with a few quotes to hold you over until fall, and let us know which of your favorites we’ve missed in the comments! … Read More

TV's 10 Best Non-Romantic Duos of the 2010-11 Season

Just as we were giving up hope, after a few weeks of lackluster episodes, that The Killing would live up to our high expectations, it came back strong with one of the most powerful hours of TV we’ve seen this year. The series, which has been criticized for failing to adequately develop its central character, homicide detective Sarah Linden, put all of its subplots on hold and focused solely on Sarah and her successor, Stephen Holder, dealing with a shocking development in her personal life. The episode got us thinking about our favorite — non-romantic — duos of this past TV season. Your Flavorpill editors’ (spoiler-packed) top ten is after the jump. … Read More

Jane Lynch’s 25 Funniest Zingers as Sue Sylvester

It’s official! According to Entertainment Weekly, Jane Lynch will be hosting this year’s Emmy Awards on September 18th. Her official statement in response to the news (“I am tickled pink to be hosting the Primetime Emmys. I’m looking forward to singing, dancing and sporting my finest tracksuit”) reminds us a bit of something her on-screen alter ego Sue Sylvester would say. Which makes sense — while Lynch has made a career out of playing quirky characters in films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Best in Show, and other TV shows, like Party Down, it’s arguably the multiple award-winning role of McKinley High’s masochistic cheerleading coach that made her into a household name. That’s why in celebration of the good news, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite Sue Sylvester zingers after the jump. Be sure to add any that we’ve missed in the comments! … Read More

So what’s the deal? According to “sources within acappella circles,” the show’s producers had been working with Divisi, a women’s group… Read More
