Slashfilm points us to a wonderful collection of movie posters, designed by Justin Erickson of Phantom City Creative and designed for an ’80s kids film series in Toronto. Although they encountered some legal barriers, Phantom City finally has the right to sell the posters. You can buy them here for $30 each – but first, because it’s Friday and someone’s got to to keep you on your toes, click through our guessing-game gallery and try to figure out what movie each one represents. Some are super-easy, others are a bit tricky. Highlight the black box below each image to check your answers.
It turns out that Twitter, among other things, is a great tool for studying language. When researchers at Carnegie Mellon examined 380,000 tweets from March of last year, they discovered that regional slang translates to our online communications. While some of the variations they uncovered were obvious, some actually surprised us. After the jump, guess which city or region uses each term and check your answers by highlighting the black box under each number.
Rolling Stone recently posted a slideshow of art by famous musicians, including Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, John Lennon, Jerry Garcia, Jim Morrison, Dee Dee Ramone, Grace Slick, Brian Eno, and Captain Beefheart. Given what they sound like, we were rather surprised by certain musicians’ visual output. Can you correctly identify which pieces belong to which artist? We’ll start with an easy one.
You can tell a lot about a person by their bedroom. If an adult male still sleeps on a twin bed with Star Wars sheets, ladies, that’s a deal breaker. Guys, if your lady love’s closet resembles Carrie Bradshaw’s, chances are she’s a high-maintenance girl. And let’s not even get into the not-so-hidden meaning behind water beds, lava lamps, and prominently displayed fetish gear! Instead, let’s test your skills at reading personality clues in bedroom design, shall we? After the jump, we’ve posted ten photos of celebrity boudoirs. Take your best guess and then highlight the answer below to find out how you did.
Musicians are a notoriously fussy bunch — and nowhere is that clearer than in their tour riders. These bizarre documents can be both totally off-putting and strangely revealing. Perhaps that’s why we can’t help but page through each new rider The Smoking Gun posts. If you’re equally addicted, then this guessing game is for you. After the jump, match the ridiculous (wildly expensive foreign cars) and semi-heartbreaking (prunes) demands with the artist who made them.
For 15 years, Mark A. Thomas has been collecting phone numbers from payphones around the world for what he calls The Payphone Project. On his website, he states the purpose of this venture: “To promote random contacts among complete strangers.” In other words, Thomas hopes that by listing numbers from public payphones on the internet, someone will give a random number a call and a complete stranger who happens to walk by will pick up on the other end. If that doesn’t sound like it’s for you, we have a slightly less adventurous task for you: Can you correctly identify which country each of the following 10 payphones come from? Don’t worry — we’ve picked images containing some clues to help you out.
Whybin TBWA Australia and The Sydney International Food Festival cooked up a clever way to promote last year’s fest — they used iconic foods from the participating countries to recreate their flags. From the green-white-red of basil-spaghetti-tomatoes to the orange-white-green of tikka masala-rice-saag, the results are both appetizing and a little reminiscent of middle-school geography class. Which brings us to our challenge: Can you correctly identify these 12 culinary flags?
In April 2009 New York Magazine published their “My First New York” issue, which included interviews with artists, musicians, politicians, porn stars, and actors about their first time in New York. After the success of the issue, New York Magazine expanded the idea into a 250-page book, My First New York: Early Adventures in the Big City, with stories that evoke every emotion possible about NYC.
Knowing that our readers are cultural experts, we’ve devised a game that will test your celebrity trivia prowess. After the jump you’ll find excerpts from 10 different celebrities’ stories. See if you can guess who the story belongs to and highlight the black box below the excerpt to find out if you’re correct. And if you feel so inclined, let us know about your first New York experience in comments.
Yesterday we came across this really cool photo gallery of rivers seen from space on Wired. These images — taken both from satellites and by astronauts — are simply stunning. In many cases they look much more like strange abstract paintings than aerial photos of nature. That’s why after the jump we’re challenging the geography nerds in our audience to correctly ID five of our favorites. Highlight the black boxes to find out if you’re right.
Our friends over at Design Boom tipped us off to an interesting new series by German photographer Oliver Schwarzwald that looks at typical breakfasts around the world. We’ve decided to turn it into a challenge for your lunch hour. Can you match the various foods in these lovely photographs with the country where they’re considered traditional breakfast fare? Don’t worry, we’ll start you out with one that’s easy.
