Alex Cox’s odd, cool, darkly comic, and frankly brilliant Repo Man hits Blu-ray this week via the cinematic angels over at the Criterion Collection. It’s always a blast to see a movie as subversive and fun as this one getting its respect as a classic, but it’s worth noting that many of our favorite cult movies were less than beloved at the time of their release. Don’t believe us? Click through to see what some of the less enlightened critics had to say, back in the day, about Repo Man and nine more cult… Read More

The Baddest Girl Gangs on Film
This summer’s cinema slate is all about teen girls gone wild, with Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers and Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring bringing the crime spree to theaters. Last week week, we listened to the Skrillex soundtrack for Korine’s neon bacchanal and looked at some awesome fan-made posters for the film. The trailer for Coppola’s Bling Ring also appeared online, and got us excited for celebrity-obsessed teens that rob from the rich. Girl groups that willfully break boundaries are rare in cinema, and we wanted to spotlight more of these troublemakers. These brazen all-girl gangs proved men don’t necessarily have the upper hand when it comes to kicking ass and taking… Read More
The Darkest Teen Movies of All Time
There are two kinds of teenagers: those who get all choked up with happiness at the end of movies like Dirty Dancing or Can’t Hardly Wait and those who prefer ice-cold comedies like Heathers. As your Flavorwire editors have always fallen into the latter camp, we were intrigued (and cautiously optimistic) to learn, last week, that Heathers is getting a small-screen reboot. In fact, the news inspired us to compile a list of the dark teen movies we love the most, all of which we’ll probably re-watch in anticipation of the TV series. The selections after the jump range from black humor to true tragedy (but we’ve left out teen horror flicks because that’s a whole other post). What ties them together is the rare acknowledgment that high school isn’t all dances, football games, and makeovers. … Read More
‘Heathers’ TV Series Coming to Bravo
On the list of announcements that have the power to make our day, anything Heathers-related ranks right at the top. So imagine how thrilled we are to discover that Bravo — which is just dipping its toes into scripted programming — is rebooting the 1988 teen-movie classic. The Hollywood Reporter breaks the news… Read More
10 of Pop Culture's Most Charming Sociopaths
Over the weekend Bret Easton Ellis went on one of his patented tweet binges, this time musing about writing a sequel to American Psycho set in the present day. Apparently he has already made 15 pages of notes. Among his tweeted ideas for the update: “Patrick would talk about Adele and Kanye and KATY PERRY because ‘Firework’ is his favorite song… and then he kills Katy Perry’s trainer…” While we’re skeptical about the need to trot Bateman out of retirement (have you seen the direct-to-video disaster that was American Psycho II: All American Girl?), we decided this was a great excuse to revisit a few of our favorite pop-culture sociopaths. Add to our twisted list in the comments! … Read More
Ranking Dr. Seuss’ Characters from Best to Worst
It makes sense that Theodor Geisel — or as we know him, Dr. Seuss — was born during the dawn of spring. His colorful characters, singsong anapestic tetrameter, and bright imagination complement the season perfectly. Tomorrow the world will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday in the form of Read Across America Day, when people (big and small) will be digging into their favorite Seuss stories. (Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax also opens in theaters.) Although they’re primarily written for children, the author’s tales were smarter than most and often contained hidden meanings with satirical, political messages and profound humanistic meaning. His characters are the devices that bring it all to life, so we’ve chosen to spotlight a few favorites in order from best to worst. Tell us who you love below. … Read More

The Many Incarnations of Holden Caulfield
Today marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of J.D. Salinger’s much-beloved novel, The Catcher in the Rye. The book has been much argued over in the years since its publication, but no one can deny that it has influenced countless artists, writers and troubled teenagers and had a lasting impact on American culture. Holden is in many ways the original angsty American teen, sex-obsessed and confused, and as a tribute to the occasion of his 60th (or should we say, 77th?) year, we’ve collected a few of our favorite Holden variations, incarnations and iterations here. Click through to see our list of troubled teens, social dropouts, misguided misanthropes and other heirs to our dear Holden Caulfield, and let us know how the man, the myth, the legend has affected your own inner life in the comments. But, of course, don’t be phony. … Read More
Teen Movie Casts We’d Like to See Reunited
Ten years after American Pie 2, the original cast of the teen comedy franchise has reunited for the upcoming (and aptly named) American Reunion. A tweeted picture from the set has been making the internet rounds, and reactions have run the gamut — some are inexplicably excited to see the return of Stifler, Finch and the gang, while others have become depressingly aware of their age. Now that Sean Penn has also reunited with his Fast Times at Ridgemont High cast, teen-movie reunions seem destined to become a trend. In anticipation of the deluge, we’ve compiled a list of teen movie casts that we want to see together again (scrunchies and angst optional). Check out our selections after the jump, and be sure to leave your own suggestions in the comments. … Read More
