7 TV Shows That Almost Had Very Different Finales

The current cover story of Entertainment Weekly is all about TV finales, featuring in-depth interviews with the showrunners behind memorable finales like The X-Files and 30 Rock. “The Art Of Saying Goodbye” remarks upon the tough process of crafting an episode that is satisfying for the creators, the audience, and the fictional characters. It’s not an easy task, and plenty of shows have mucked it up, but the process showrunners go through is fascinating. One of the most interesting interviews is with Vince Gilligan, who reveals some original ideas he had for the Breaking Bad finale. Gilligan’s not the only indecisive writer — many creators have pondered, shot, and even released different endings from the ones that aired. Here are seven TV shows and the spoiler-filled alternate endings that almost were. … Read More

‘How I Met Your Mother’ and the Inevitable Disappointment of TV Finales

How much did you hate that series finale of How I Met Your Mother? Or maybe you loved it? It’s OK, you can admit it. This is a safe space. This is a weird morning for television, one that’s vaguely reminiscent of the mornings after Lost and Breaking Bad ended, mornings when we’re all aimlessly wandering around Twitter, searching for answers and like-minded opinions. The Internet is a mess after a long-running and beloved television series ends. It’s understandable because seeing a show end can be like losing a group of friends, but the aftermath is also often full of rage. Endings are difficult, finality is weird, and television rarely does what you want it to. That’s what you sign up for as a fan. … Read More

Ranking Ted’s Girlfriends on ‘How I Met Your Mother’

Tonight, How I Met Your Mother comes to an end after nine seasons, over 200 episodes, and a handful of potential mothers. Though there were plenty of side plots and fun adventures, the core of the show was the mystery of the identity of the titular mother. For years, Ted dated around New York City with varying results, and while some of his girlfriends, such as the “Slutty Pumpkin” or the childish Becky in “Baby Talk” are barely worth mentioning, there were some significant women in his life. Here, we rank six of Ted’s girlfriends from worst to best. … Read More

Is ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Hinting At a Tragic Finale?

Around the fourth or fifth season of How I Met Your Mother, I started to jokingly liken the show to a sitcom version of Lost. Both are full of twists and turns to keep us guessing; have a central mystery that lends itself well to the fun of internet sleuthing; are heavily reliant on flashbacks (technically, the entire series can be considered a flashback) and flash-forwards; and, with every new season, it became more and more worrisome that both series’ finales would be more disappointing than not. (It can also be argued that both overstayed their welcome, though I’d say Lost knew exactly when to go.) Both shows have also, since the beginning, been the subject of “the main character is actually dead” theories — and last night’s episode added fuel to that fire. … Read More

Movie Nerds: Stop Flipping Out About Greta Gerwig Starring in ‘How I Met Your Dad’

The actual date when Greta Gerwig was anointed cinema’s Indie It Girl varies, based on who you talk to. For some, it was her title role in Joe Swanberg’s 2007 film Hannah Takes the Stairs; for others (this fan included) it came in the midst of that incredible telephone scene in Greenberg; and latecomers may have just signed on at last year’s Frances Ha. But whatever the case, she’s one of the most widely beloved presences on the independent film landscape, which is why the news of her possible network sitcom gig caused a full-on Movie Nerd Twitter™ meltdown. … Read More
