Battle of the Bands: Fictional Musicians vs. Their Real-Life Counterparts

We’ve been hearing a lot of buzz recently about Jesse Plemons (ahem, Landry Clarke from Friday Night Lights) and his real-life band, Cowboy and Indian. Some of our favorite Landry scenes in FNL were related to his Christian speed-metal band Crucifictorious, but Cowboy and Indian may be, if anything, its polar opposite. Watching Landry croon bluegrass melodies on guitar and sip whiskey under a warm light in his recently released vido got us thinking about all the characters with bands who actually have bands in real life — and which ones are better. Click through for our roundup of bands from TV and film whose members are — for better or worse — actually musicians, and tell us if you agree with our verdicts in the comments! … Read More

10 Crush-Killing Film Roles, from Willy Wonka to Aileen Wuornos

We’ve been excited about Hesher ever since we first heard about the film, which debuted at Sundance last year. So we’re definitely planning to see it when it makes its theatrical debut this weekend. But despite our anticipation, we do have one worry: that we’ll never be able to look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt the same way again. You see, he plays Hesher‘s title character, a greasy, ratty-haired, tattooed metal guy with bad teeth and penchant for farting. Thankfully, Gordon-Levitt is hardly the first actor to sacrifice beauty or likability for a good role. After the jump, we recall ten more roles that killed our crushes, on everyone from Charlize Theron to Christian Bale. … Read More

Watch Jared Leto Perform “Pennyroyal Tea” as Kurt Cobain

Oh boy. We already have so many conflicting feelings about Jared Leto. He was every girl’s (and many guys’) high-school crush, back in his Jordan Catalano days. A few years after that, he kind of fell off the radar. But recently, his band that everyone used to joke about, 30 Seconds to Mars, has become legitimately, horrifyingly popular — to say nothing of the unfortunate hair choices that seem to define his new, rock-star persona.

So, we’re feeling pretty ambivalent about this clip Leto posted on his website yesterday, the 17th anniversary of Cobain’s death. It shows the actor/musician dressed up as Cobain, performing “Pennyroyal Tea” and a few seconds of “Rape Me,” as well as wandering around outdoors with a flannel shirt tied around his waist. Leto explains that he shot the clip when he heard a film was being made about Cobain’s life (probably, from the looks of it, Gus Van Sant’s Last Days) but never submitted it for consideration. Of the late legend, Leto writes, “He gave us all permission to create no matter what our skill set and reminded me that dreams are possible. Thanks for that.” Thoughts? … Read More

MTV Bans 30 Seconds To Mars’ New Video

If you’re short on time, then you should just skip the first half of 30 Seconds To Mars’ new music video for “Hurricane.” The really racy stuff (namely the moment at 9:17, when, as MTV’s compliance team notes, “WOMAN RUNS FINGER OVER OTHER WOMAN’S G-STRING CLAD BOTTOM AND TOUCHES HER ANUS”) doesn’t happen until over half way in. Yes, this music video is 13 minutes long and it’s broken down into chapters. Click through to watch the censored (but still NSFW) version of the banned clip and check out a rather hilarious frame by frame analysis of the original by MTV’s censors. It’s also worth nothing that while 30 Seconds To Mars do hope to post the uncut video online at some point, it hasn’t happened yet. … Read More
