The Dude Is an Award-winning Photographer: Jeff Bridges’ Best Behind-the-Scenes Shots

Jeff Bridges is not just The Dude, he’s THE dude: since 1982, he’s been snapping artistic photos of the sets he’s been on, some of himself, some of his directors and castmates. Last week, he was honored at the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Awards dinner as a special presenter. Here are some of the evocative black-and-white photos he took over the years. … Read More

The Best Insults in Film

Recently, Flavorwire rounded up some of our very favorite punchlines from our favorite funny movies — which was a bit of a job in itself, since there are so many great lines, and they’re funny in so many different ways. But perhaps the most reliable way to get a laugh is one of the oldest: a great insult. The best can come from anywhere (even a serious drama), prompting not only a quick, dirty, slightly guilty laugh, but also the jotting down of a particularly effective slam in one’s mental notebook. Click through for 25 of the cruelest, funniest, and most effective cinematic… Read More

This Supercut Will Make You Never Want to Fly Again

It has its share of problems (contrary to what the ads are showing you, it spends most of its running time being yet another addiction melodrama), but Robert Zemeckis’ Flight does have one major draw: its opening in-flight sequences are among the most gripping, terrifying flying scenes ever put to film. And that’s not an easy boast to make — over the past several years, many filmmakers have brought the air traveler’s biggest fear to harrowing life on screen. After the jump, we’ve put together a dozen of the most harrowing flying sequences into this exclusive supercut. … Read More

The Dude Abides: Jeff Bridges Is Publishing a Book of Zen Teachings

It’s not only Jeff Bridges’ most iconic character who wishes we would just take it easy, man. While his stint as The Dude inspired a religion of its own, Bridges himself is a practicing Buddhist who meditates for a half an hour before starting work on set and aspires to infuse… Read More

Who Played It Better: 10 Literary Roles Filled by Multiple Actors

Now that the ever-so-eagerly anticipated David Fincher adaptation of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is out in theaters, fans of Stieg Larsson’s trilogy have had the chance to see how Fincher’s take stacks up — not just against the books, but against the previous Swedish film version, and more specifically in the representation of iconic heroine Lisbeth Salander. The role was played in the original films by Noomi Rapace (currently appearing in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows); for the American films, Rooney Mara takes over.

Who’s better in the role? It’s a tricky question — and one that comes up every time multiple actors take their turns playing a beloved literary character. The critics have weighed in on who plays Lisbeth better, but after the jump, we’ll take a look at ten previous cases of “different actor, same role.” … Read More

10 of the Best Drunken Movie Performances

“The best research for playing a drunk is being a British actor for 20 years,” says Michael Caine. That hasn’t stopped plenty of American actors from giving it a shot. This week, Johnny Depp appears in The Rum Diary, based on a typically boozy (not to mention druggy) book by Hunter Thompson. Even if you try to ignore the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Depp has had years of experience to hone his on-screen stagger. But he’s not the first – and definitely not the craziest – actor to bring the party to work. Below, we revisit some of the best drunken performances committed to film. … Read More

Ranking Your Cinematic Presidents from Worst to Best

On this day back in 1947, President Harry S. Truman became the first US president to give an official address on television, asking the American people to cut back on their use of grain in order to help starving Europeans. It was the beginning of a complicated and occasionally contentious relationship between the White House and the moving image.

This week, another image of the American presidency — a fictional one, this time — hits multiplexes in the form of George Clooney, whose new film The Ides of March concerns a handsome governor running for the highest office in the land (with the help of equally dreamy staffer Ryan Gosling). In commemoration of this significant date in presidential mass media history, and with Clooney’s Mike Morris aiming to join the ranks of cinematic commanders-in-chief, let’s rank ten of the most memorable movie presidents from worst to best. (And to clarify: we’re ranking them as presidents, not as enjoyable movie characters). Check out our rankings after the jump, and let us know if you agree in the comments. … Read More

Video of the Day: ‘The Big Lebowski’ Cast Reunion

“Over the line!” “Obviously you’re not a golfer.” “That rug really tied the room together.” “I am the walrus.” “Nobody fucks with the Jesus.” “Don’t be fatuous, Jeffrey.” Really, we could go on all day here. As card-carrying Little Lebowski Urban Achievers, we managed to get in to The Big Lebowski cast reunion and screening last night at Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom. Also present? Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, and the film’s music director, T Bone Burnett. The event was part of this year’s annual Lebowski Fest, as well as a celebration for the film’s brand-new Blu-Ray edition. For all you super-fans who didn’t have the chance to down some Caucasians with the Dude last night, here’s a video recap and some of our favorite moments. … Read More

10 Movies That Make You Want to Smoke

On Monday, yet another public smoking law went into effect in New York City, this one banning the consumption of cigarettes in 43 square miles of parks, public plazas, boardwalks, and beaches. While it’s certainly not as shocking as the 2002 prohibition on smoking in restaurants and bars (“No smoking in bars now,” Eddie Izzard memorably warned, “and soon, no drinking and no talking!”), it is yet another sign of the continuing ghettoization of the habit.

I should pause a moment to point out that I am not a smoker — never have been, never will be. I recognize the indisputable health dangers, and the addictive nature of the product, and I’m not making light of them. But here’s the thing: I’m also a movie nut, so my feelings about smoking are, well, complicated. The classic teen impetus for smoking is that it “looks cool,” and countless anti-smoking advocates have done their best to debunk that notion (“Y’know what doesn’t look cool? A voice box,” etc.), but you know what? We’re all adults. We can say it. Smoking does look cool. At least, it often looks cool in movies, when it’s properly lit and framed and done by a movie star. So, in memory of the smoker, that most endangered species, join us after the jump for ten movies that make you feel like lighting one up (plus one that does quite the opposite). … Read More
