‘The Giver’ Is a Poor Imitation of All the Teen Dystopias Lois Lowry’s Book Inspired

The main theme of Lois Lowry’s classic book The Giver is “sameness.” The Giver takes place in a dystopian society — disguised as a utopian one — without change, without choice, and without differences. Everything is identical, and no one has any emotions. The story shoots down the idea of sameness as an ideal. The movie adaptation accidentally embraces it, resulting in a film that tries too hard to be similar to YA adaptations with vaguely similar premises. It tries to force emotions out of its viewers, tries so hard that it becomes laughable. As a book-to-movie adaptation, The Giver is terrible. Even just as a movie, well, it’s still pretty bad. … Read More

25 Great ’80s Movies Time Has Forgotten

Buried among the also-rans within this week’s Blu-ray releases, you’ll find the HD debut of Tequila Sunrise, Robert Towne’s 1988 mystery/love triangle thriller starring Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Kurt Russell. It’s the kind of movie studios don’t make that much anymore — an entertaining and reasonably intelligent picture for grown-ups, done on a medium budget with the expectation of a medium return. There’s nosurplus of love out there for mainstream American moviemaking in the 1980s — and for good reason. But there are also a handful of films from that much-maligned era that have stood the test of time, and deserve more retroactive attention than they… Read More

12 Trailers That Give Away the Whole Movie

That said, it’s far from the first movie to be marketed with a trailer that gives away the entire game; here are a few of the most notorious examples (and consider yourself warned, spoiler-wise). … Read More

The Best Insults in Film

Recently, Flavorwire rounded up some of our very favorite punchlines from our favorite funny movies — which was a bit of a job in itself, since there are so many great lines, and they’re funny in so many different ways. The best can come from anywhere (even a serious drama), prompting not only a quick, dirty, slightly guilty laugh, but also the jotting down of a particularly effective slam in one’s mental notebook. Click through for 25 of the cruelest, funniest, and most effective cinematic… Read More

This Supercut Will Make You Never Want to Fly Again

It has its share of problems (contrary to what the ads are showing you, it spends most of its running time being yet another addiction melodrama), but Robert Zemeckis’ Flight does have one major draw: its opening in-flight sequences are among the most gripping, terrifying flying scenes ever put to film. And that’s not an easy boast to make — over the past several years, many filmmakers have brought the air traveler’s biggest fear to harrowing life on screen. After the jump, we’ve put together a dozen of the most harrowing flying sequences into this exclusive supercut. … Read More
