What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we imaged what this teddy bear skin rug would feel like beneath our feet. We learned about the science behind bursting water balloons in this video. We were pretty impressed by the art of Jello origami. We wondered if microwavable footwear would be the next Snuggie sensation. We tried to tell the difference between Lady Gaga and Jem in this fun quiz posted at Mental Floss. We were glad to hear that Lindsay Lohan got gold stars on her probation report. We read about the return of Atari. We weren’t shocked to learn about this Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark countersuit against director Julie Taymor. We counted the werewolves in this trailer for FDR: American Badass!. We enjoyed this solo performance by Adam Ben Ezra covering the Mad Men theme, live and on upright bass. We approved of this Lord of the Rings manicure. And finally, we saw where all the trees in the U.S. were located and determined that the Midwest won’t be enjoying a shady picnic anytime soon.

10 Cartoon Ladies With Killer Style

8

In about a week Shout Factory will be releasing a sparkly pink box set of JEM and The Holograms. The truly outrageous series follows Starlight Music maven Jerrica Benton and her pop music alter-ego, Jem, who leads the band The Holograms. The show has gained a sizable cult following over the years thanks to all the glamour, glitter, fashion, and fame. While the boyfriend drama and scuffles with sinister rival bands, The Misfits and The Stingers, are amusing to watch (note: we never noticed how many catastrophic, fiery explosions happened on the show until recently), Jem’s unlimited wardrobe of ’80s-riffic fashions always wowed us. And her glam rock makeup, and her giant pink hair (everyone’s coiffure is enormous, actually). What other cartoon ladies had great personal style? Here’s our list of fashionable favorites. Now tell us your picks.

The 10 Best Songs by Cartoon Musicians

18

We all know the mental agony that is the earworm, the frustration of having one song unwelcomely soundtrack your actions throughout a day, from shampooing your hair to hailing a cab. This torture crosses over into the realm of humiliation when the tune you can’t stop humming is performed by a group of cartoon characters. And yet, our enjoyment of these songs isn’t always unwarranted — plenty of the songs we hear on cartoons are catchy as hell. So plug in your earphones and turn away from nearby coworkers because we’ve compiled a list of undeniably good jams that just so happen to have been sung by animated musicians. Check out our choices after the jump and be sure to leave your own suggestions in the comments.

It’s Showtime, Synergy: ‘Jem’ Returns to TV

1

Some exciting news for those of us who grew up in the ’80s: Jem, the animated series that made the idea of being a music company exec with a rock star alter ego seem like a totally viable career path, is coming back to TV on the Hub starting May 28th. Back in the day, we were always obsessed with Kimber, Jerrica/Jem’s little sister and The Holograms’ keyboardist, but we have the sneaking suspension that when we rewatch the show as jaded adults, we’re going to be strangely drawn to the band’s arch rivals, The Misfits. (Maybe their songs really were better?) In the meantime, join us in getting the show’s truly, truly outrageous theme song stuck in your head. [via PopCandy]

Hulu and YouTube: Still Free, Home of Truly, Truly, Truly Outrageous ’80s TV

With remakes of V, the A-Team, and Red Dawn all currently underway, it looks like Hollywood’s really pushing ’80s-era action-adventure on us in a big way. But anyone between the ages of 25 and 40 knows that if you’re looking for some real nostalgia, it’s all about Saturday mornings. Though we may not have the wood-paneling in our basement to make the cartoon experience truly complete, we do have the internet, and before we start having to shell out to enjoy our TV on our computers (the way nature intended, obviously), here’s a look at just some of the shows streaming over the world wide web for free (Facts of Life lunchbox and Glowworm doll not included).
