After seeing his awkward promos, we were a little worried about the kind of show Jeremy Renner would host on Saturday Night Live this week. And we were sort of right to be, though we can’t really blame the failings of last night’s episode on him. Renner was nervous and clearly uncomfortable with the cue cards, but the sketches that failed did so because of lack of good ideas, not because of any flubbing on his part. Our hypothesis? None of the writers could think of anything besides jokes about Petraeus, and so they had to jam some half-baked stuff in there to fill the void. Can’t have a whole show about one thing, after all. Click through to watch the best and worst of last night’s show, and let us know if you agree or think we’re totally off base in the comments. … Read More

Jeremy Renner’s Awkward ‘SNL’ Promos Have Us Worried
First things first: We’re huge fans of Jeremy Renner’s work around here. He was great in The Avengers, and made the Bourne reboot something that we could actually get excited about — not to mention his well-deserved Oscar nominations for The Town and The Hurt Locker. All of that said, after watching the promos for this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live, we’re wondering if Renner’s going to totally bomb. Outside of the silly outfits montage at the end, we didn’t crack a smile once. We’re certainly not saying that dramatic actors can’t be funny, but it seems like SNL doesn’t really know what to do with them, other than making them look stupid (see: last season’s Josh Brolin episode). Anyway, take a look, and let us know if you still plan on watching in the comments. … Read More

10 Movie Franchises That Lost Their Lead — And What Happened
If you felt a slight gust from the west yesterday, it may have been the folks at Universal Pictures letting out a sigh of relief; The Bourne Legacy, the newest (and Bourne-less) entry in their venerable franchise put up respectable numbers over the weekend, selling $40 million of tickets to a picture that was, from the outset, a bit of dicey proposition. Its success got us thinking about other film series that lost their lead actors, and whether those franchises succeeded or failed in their absence; we collect and analyze the data for you after the jump. … Read More

Matt Damon Would Like to Return to the ‘Bourne’ Franchise
As fantastic as the trailer for The Bourne Legacy looks, and as excited as we are to see Tony Gilroy (who wrote/co-wrote all three of the original Bourne films) in the director’s chair for a change, and as much as we adore Jeremy Renner, we can’t help but find the idea of the… Read More
Video Essay: “Threequel: Even More Famous Faces in Their Film Debuts”
Well, I’m sorry, but we just couldn’t resist. After our first two “Famous Faces in their Film Debut” video essays took the Internet by storm, we found that with a bit more digging, we could unearth enough new goodies to warrant a third (but final, probably) entry in the series. So check out a squeaky-voiced Tom Cruise, a little tiny Angelina Jolie, an even tinier Robert Downey Jr., and a young (but somehow still old-looking) Tommy Lee Jones, among many other oddities, after the jump. … Read More

Celebrity Fight Club: 10 of Hollywood’s Bad Boy Elite
Jeremy Renner — who appeared in the recently released installment of long-running Tom Cruise action vehicle, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol — was at a pub in Phuket, Thailand last night when a huge brawl broke out. Rumors circulated that the Hurt Locker actor might have been injured, but later reports confirmed that Renner left the bar unharmed as soon as the frenzy broke out. The star’s reps advised J.R. was “not involved” in the attack, but it made us wonder if his bad boy screen persona had any real-life influence when it came to the verbal assault that apparently started the whole thing. Renner’s not the only Hollywood actor who appears to be a little too comfortable in the part of troublemaker. Past the break, we list several other stars working today that probably belong to the celebrity fight club we’re not allowed to talk about (them’s the rules). Who’d you add? … Read More
10 Young Actors Who Should Be Our Next Action Stars
Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol, the fourth installment of the venerable action franchise, is in theaters now (well, sort of; they did this tiered release where it went to IMAX screens last Friday, but everywhere else on Wednesday, so if you’ve got an IMAX screen in your city, you can go see it there, but if not, later, and… yeah). When it was in pre-production last year, much ink was spilled over the casting of Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner in one of the supporting roles, with speculation running rampant that the young actor was being groomed to take over the series’ leading role from producer/star Tom Cruise, who is, at 49, perhaps getting a touch long-in-the-tooth for all this running/fighting/climbing 100+ story building nonsense.
There does seem to be something of a dearth of young actors equipped to take over the action-hero mantle from folks like Cruise, Will Smith (43), Jackie Chan (57), and the stars of The Expendables. So we got to thinking about some of the twentysomething actors who we’d like to see take a shot at action stardom. Check out our picks after the jump, and add your own in the comments. … Read More
