We had a lot of fun with the delightfully terrible bootleg covers found in black market-lite shops across the world. Little did we know that Russia elevates unauthorized film marketing to an art form… a hilariously poor art form. Thanks to Adme.Ru, we’ve come across an entire gallery of some of the worst hand-painted posters for advertising small theater screenings. See Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis warped into odd-looking, bulbous humanoids, Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life reduced to a vaguely Constructivist motif of an attempted Brad Pitt, and Harry Potter looking more like Voldemort than Voldemort. Behold!
This week at Mister Saturday Night, our buddies Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin are hosting underground hip-hop legends Grand Puba (from Brand Nubian) and Lord Finesseplus big time Detroit dance man Theo Parrish. Sounds like a party to us. If you’re in NYC and want to join us this Saturday at Santos for what should be a real shakedown, just answer this one question, after the jump.
Legendary godfather of the block party, pioneer of electro-funk, and originator of the Universal Zulu Nation, Afrika Bambaataa headlines Mister Saturday Night this week. Personally connected to nearly every break, beat, and funk record that’s made crate-diggers salivate and B-boys twitch since the birth of hip-hop, Bam continues to spin the tracks he’s helped turn into classics. Saturday night he appears alongside up-and-coming BK disco-tinged funk crew the Phenomenal Handclap Band. (Think Escort, but sub synths for horns, and make it spacier.) Or, just take our word for it: the only adjective you really need to describe ‘em is already in the band’s name. Justin Carter is a New York-based DJ, part-time scribe, and connoisseur of funky jams. Along with his co-conspirator Eamon Harkin, he produces New Release — a selection of handpicked event recommendations — and throws an eclectic weekly party called Mister Saturday Night. We tracked him down approximately 17 feet away from us in Flavorpill HQ, where Justin has taken up residence as he pulls together a stellar evening at the MoMA on March 4.
Says Justin, “It’s the opening night of the Armory show, which is a huge international art fair. The MoMA is throwing a party after the preview, with cocktails, a DJ set by Justin Miller from DFA, and a live performance by Gang Gang Dance. It’s gonna be nice.”
After the jump, Justin professes his love for New York City, shares his recipe for an epic throwdown, and introduces us to the real (fake) Mister Saturday Night.
