What's On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Labyrinth by listening to “Magic Dance” on repeat and watching a behind-the-scenes documentary on the beloved Jim Henson film. We were happy to see that some of our favorite spots (Greenlight Books! Politics and Prose!) made this interactive list of the best… Read More

25 Great Parties on Film We Wish We Could Have Attended

Movies teach us how to party. Think about it: How many teen movies — almost all of which inevitably end in some kind of dance or parents-out-of-town blowout — did you watch before you were actually old enough to go to a high-school party? From sophisticated dinner gatherings to all-night ragers, we’ve all fantasized about scoring an invite to one of the glamorous parties we’ve seen on the big screen. With summer in full swing and theme ideas for our own future fêtes in mind, we asked the experts in Flavorpill’s extended family to tell us which celluloid party they’d most like to have attended. Their picks, and ours, are after the jump. … Read More

Rating David Bowie’s Film Roles from Best to Worst

As you may have noticed, we are a little bit David Bowie-crazy here at Flavorpill. So we are thrilled at the news that New York’s Museum of Art and Design is mounting David Bowie, Artist next month. As part of the show, they’re doing a retrospective of Bowie on film — which gives us a great excuse to rate his acting roles from best to worst. For the sake of our sanity, we’re limiting the list to ten of his best-known, English-language movies and omitting D.A. Pennebaker’s Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture, because that’s a whole ‘nother (totally wonderful) thing entirely. … Read More

5 Big Kid-Approved Picture Books

According to a recent New York Times article, picture books are losing popularity as over-eager yuppie parents push their toddlers toward “big-kid” alternatives. Although illustrated stories by Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and Maurice Sendak have continued to receive their widespread dues, children’s publishers have been forced to decrease their overall multi-media output and, in turn, the platform for new titles. In protest of this culturally impoverishing trend, here are five stunningly illustrated children’s books that are as engrossing and educational for kids of any age as their text-only counterparts. … Read More

Video of the Day: Labyrinth Mashup

One of our favorite movies ever, Labyrinth, gets mashed up with The Shining, Planet of the Apes, Inception, and a handful of other films in this four-minute spoof. Note: If you live in New York, our friends at the 92YTribeca are hosting a Labyrinth sing-along/costume party on Friday, October 29th. We’ll be there, attempting to juggle some crystal balls. … Read More

Photo Gallery: Art Inspired by Jim Henson’s Labyrinth

We’re suckers for those sublime moments when high art meets pop culture. Also, we love anything involving David Bowie. That should explain why we were nothing short of ecstatic to hear about Dance Magic Dance, a group art show inspired by Jim Henson’s 1986 masterpiece (that’s right, we said it) Labyrinth. The exhibition kicks off Friday at Los Angeles’ R&R gallery, but we’ve got an exclusive preview of images that range from a Guernica-inspired scene to Bowie and Jennifer Connelly reimagined as cartoon cats to an action shot of one artist painting the Goblin King’s generously endowed codpiece. Locals who hope to see these works in person should take note: The show closes July 17, which means you only have a little over a week to get your Jareth on. … Read More
