Will Luke Evans Be Brave Enough to Become Hollywood’s First Openly Gay Leading Man?

When Zachary Quinto publicly came out as a gay man in October 2011, plenty of cultural commentators questioned if the admission (which had been speculated online for years) would hurt his career. Last year’s double-whammy of revelations from Frank Ocean and Anderson Cooper prompted at least one piece in New York magazine claiming that coming out was no longer the career-changing move it used to be. Last June, Entertainment Weekly devoted its cover story to the notion that LGBT entertainers are opening up about their personal lives in such a casual way that no one seems to notice. The shrugging-off of a star’s sexuality does not, however, occur when the actor in question aims for Hollywood leading-man status. Six sickening contestants were left to duke it out this week on RuPaul’s Drag Race, with their acting skills and ability to do a believable Spanish accent as their only weapons. That’s right: the main challenge had the girls in teams of three, with each group filming its own episode of a telenovela. Between the hilarious fake tears and the heartbreaking real ones (Detox opened up for the first time about the death of her ex-boyfriend), this episode was as dramatic and suspenseful as the faux TV shows the queens made. ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 5, Episode 8: “Scent of a Drag Queen”

This week’s RuPaul’s Drag Race challenge tested the contestants on multiple levels: the girls had to create a scent, design a perfume bottle, come up with a clever name, and, finally, shoot a successful ad. This week brought RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5′s most emotionally charged moment yet when, during Untucked, Alyssa’s father finally admitted to being proud of her. Meanwhile, the main challenge had the queens recording a charity single together in the spirit of U.S.A. for Africa, complete with ’80s drag, to impress guest judges La Toya Jackson and The Pointer Sisters — which proved difficult for the less in-tune queens.
