After seeing his awkward promos, we were a little worried about the kind of show Jeremy Renner would host on Saturday Night Live this week. And we were sort of right to be, though we can’t really blame the failings of last night’s episode on him. Renner was nervous and clearly uncomfortable with the cue cards, but the sketches that failed did so because of lack of good ideas, not because of any flubbing on his part. Our hypothesis? None of the writers could think of anything besides jokes about Petraeus, and so they had to jam some half-baked stuff in there to fill the void. Can’t have a whole show about one thing, after all. The Best and Worst Singles from Repackaged Pop Albums
There comes a time in a pop star’s life when she, her business manager, some barnacles from the major label footing the bill for her latest record, and some other freeloaders gather in a conference room and look at how much money she’s been able to scare up a few singles into an album release. They might decide, “We’ve sold quite a lot of records and people want more!” They may note that people are still buzzing about the artist and suggest, “Say, auspicious pop star, how would you like to record another album quickly so we can make another boatload of bucks?” At this point, the pop star might say, “You know what? I’m tired.” But, plucky as they are, major label types will persist: “Okay, well, we have all these live tracks. We have some b-sides and demos, too. We can master them in Garage Band and have you pose for a new album cover and call it a ‘deluxe edition.’” At this point, the pop star might say, “Sure, fine, is there more Cîroc?” Of course, there is always more Cîroc. … Read More

Is “Somebody That I Used to Know” the Inevitable Song of the Summer?
It seems like as soon as temperatures begin to top 70 degrees, everyone’s got an opinion on what the song of the summer should be — Flavorpill included. And while no one loves a good critical conversation (or backyard bar argument) more than us, we’re also curious about which track is actually getting… Read More
2012 Grammy Awards: The Night’s Weirdest Moments
Last night’s Grammy Awards ceremony was possibly the most awkward product to come out of the music industry since, well, last year’s terrible John Mayer “Jolene” tribute at the Grammys. The inevitable red-carpet polling about Whitney Houston’s death ranged from cringe-worthy to outright ghoulish, and the range of impromptu supergroups was baffling, disturbing, and eccentric, to say the least. From Bon Iver’s mumbled acceptance speech to Brian Wilson’s never-wished-for collaboration with Maroon 5 and Foster the People, the whole night was full of moments that made music lovers scratch our heads and wonder whether the entire show had been pasted together from various YouTube mash-ups. And yet, we could have probably guessed that this ceremony would be bizarre as soon as we glimpsed Nicki Minaj on the red carpet with a fake pope. We count down the weirdest moments of the 2012 Grammys, after the jump. … Read More
Charlie Day’s ‘SNL’ Promos Look Promising
We’re big fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day around here — particularly his penchant for yelling — so when we learned that he’d be hosting this weekend’s installment of Saturday Night Live, we were thrilled. In fact, we were almost able to forget that for some reason (we’re guessing Adam Levine’s involvement with another NBC show, The Voice) Maroon 5 is this week’s musical guest. Click through to watch Day reunite with his Horrible Bosses co-star Jason Sudeikis in the promo clips for the episode, and let us know in the comments if you find the whole “Two Guys Who Love Things They Did” bit as funny as we do. … Read More
