While the hipster Tumblr meme has been dead for a while, we’re betting on the rise of a not so different substitute: the hippie Tumblr meme. Basically just the same Polaroid-esque pics dripping with (real!) nostalgia and repackaged with a term that doesn’t immediately cause the eyes to roll. A strange sound briefly lit up the blogs as a clip of *Philip Roth bellowing over a dance beat made the rounds. The track (“Jewish Shouting Mix 3”) is the work of James Marcus, book critic, translator, and editor of the Columbia Journalism Review’s Page Views. Marcus captured the audio in a 2008 interview with Roth for the LA Times. Roth was explaining his disdain for the movie version of Portnoy’s Complaint, which he described as “a bunch of Jewish shouting.” To Marcus’ surprise, Roth then proceeded to demonstrate exactly what he meant, with an outburst Marcus calls a “historic bit of ululation.” Now set to a pulsing, faintly tribal techno beat, the outburst leaves us bewildered and bemused. This morning we received a forward from a friend about a new Web site. When we arrived at Shiba Inu Puppy Cam, the day’s live cute stream had yet to begin, but we were entertained by the excited chatter of their rabid fan base:

There are currently 6,119 viewers watching the puppies roll around in their small plastic crate — something that we find both boring and vaguely creepy. All we can think about is the anxious user who was looking to score a quick fix from an alternate puppy cam. Can you say To Catch A Predator?
