If you’re wondering what Michael Stipe’s been up to since R.E.M. went their separate ways, well, he’s been doing quite a bit in the field of visual art, and he’s been making some pretty fascinating work of late. Earlier this week, he uploaded a series of images to his Tumblr that very much caught our fancy — they pictures are nudes, manipulated in a way that seems to draw on the aesthetic of net art and glitch culture. Curious about the work, we contacted Stipe’s assistant, who passed on this message from the man himself: “These are studies for a body of work that I’ll be presenting later this year. I’m in production now working on the final pieces. Thanks for the interest!!!” … Read More

Watch A New Video for R.E.M.’s ‘Blue,’ Directed by James Franco and Starring Lindsay Lohan
It’s hard to believe that R.E.M. broke up over a year ago — has it really been that long? Their fifteenth and final album, Collapse Into Now, dropped in March of last year, but it’s only now that this video, created by James Franco for the Collapse Into Now Film Project, has risen to the surface. The video is grainy and unsettling, if still kind of beautiful, like a grown-up version of Less Than Zero, with layered footage, bright lights, and shots of a sexed-up Lindsay Lohan modeling. All this behind a fuzzy track with echoing vocals by Michael Stipe and Patti Smith. Ah, the City of Angels. Click through to watch, and let us know what you think in the comments. … Read More

10 Musical Couples We Wish Would Reunite
Music is a passionate occupation to pursue, and it makes sense that some of our favorite musicians have, well, hooked up with some of our other favorite musicians in fiery ways throughout the years. 10 of the All-Time Greatest Pop/Rock Collaborations
As we reported last week, apparently Ke$ha is collaborating with her “idol” Iggy Pop for a song on her upcoming album. Our initial response to this was pretty much like everyone else’s, involving a combination of the letters “W,” “T,” and “F,” but the more we think about it, the more we’re coming around to the idea that the track could actually be pretty great. After all, it’s hardly the first pop/rock collaboration, and some of the results of pairing up pop singers and rock stars over the years have been thoroughly excellent. We’ve pulled together a few of our favorite such collaborations after the jump — as ever, let us know (nicely) what we’ve missed. … Read More
A Collection of Offbeat Rock Star Appearances in Animation
Let’s face it. Disney isn’t normally knocking on musicians’ doors, asking them to join the cast of their next animated masterpiece. Yet through the years, artists such as Lou Reed, Marilyn Manson, Tom Petty, and the lovable Donny Osmond (he was a little bit rock and roll, lest we forget!) have lent their voices and talents to a few lesser-known animated films, and cartoon series as well. Whether making an animated cameo, contributing to the soundtrack, or even taking on a completely different character, you’ll find that these ten rock and roll artists have certainly left their mark on the industry. Who did we leave out? … Read More
