For most Americans, Ash Wednesday is nothing more than the day after Mardi Gras, where everyone comes into work with a hangover — including the few people wandering around the office with ashes on their heads. Now, we don’t mean to be scolds, and we’re the last folks in the world who would push a religious agenda on you, but we’d also like to point out that all the partying you’re doing tonight is in preparation for some serious self-denial in the time between tomorrow and Easter. And regardless of your beliefs, there has to be something you’d benefit from giving up for a while.

So, in the spirit of the cultural resolutions we made at the end of last year, we’ve picked ten cultural habits — vices, crutches, tendencies — to give up for the next seven weeks. Tell us what you’re kicking to the curb in the comments.

Chuck Klosterman Presents: 12 Albums That Kick Writer’s Block

Considering Chuck Klosterman kicks off his new book of essays, Eating the Dinosaur, with a piece about the inherent lack of truth in interviews, especially his own, it only makes sense to skirt the straight-up Q&A and angle for something the man might not want to lie about. Sure, there’s a risk Klosterman might not take the bait (“I don’t feel it’s my obligation to respond to anything…”), yet 99 times out of 99, he probably will (“still, I provide answers to every question I encounter, even if I don’t know what I should say”). So, instead of asking him to answer questions, per se, and risk a variable truthiness, we thought we’d get a better bead on the word-worker at work if he told us what music he plays while he’s reading and writing.

This past weekend brought the second-annual All Points West music festival to New Jersey’s Liberty State Park — along with a healthy dose of rain to provide the traditional mud-drenched festival experience our friends across the pond know so well. Jay-Z stepped in on Friday night to save the day after the Beastie Boys’ last-minute cancellation, performing to a crowd willing to brave thunderstorms for his high-energy set; both Jay and Sunday headliners Coldplay paid tribute to the Beasties by covering their material, with Chris Martin’s solo piano version of “Fight for Your Right” coming across as especially endearing.
