David Williams’ ‘Ponycon Portraits’ Capture My Little Pony Fandom, From Kids to Bronies

By

David Williams is a Brooklyn-based photographer who has an eye for portraiture. In his recent Ponycon Portraits series, taken at February’s 2015 Ponycon in Brooklyn, he captures the range of My Little Pony fandom, from little girls to the infamous “bronies” (adult male fans of My Little Pony). Williams, a 2011 Art Institute of Colorado graduate, says that “it was important for me to show how diverse the convention is and how passionate these fans are about My Little Pony, whether they be a male, female, or child.” The results are honest and striking. Strange and Surreal Paintings Starring Little Girls’ Toys

By

It’s like Hieronymous Bosch with Barbies, or a horror movie starring beloved little girls’ toys. Those are the kinds of comparisons that come to mind when perusing the paintings of Ewelina Koszykowski, a Poland-born, New York City-based artist whose Immaculate Deception series places dolls and My Little Pony toys (and sometimes hybrids of both) in strange and disconcerting contexts. In one, dozens of undressed Barbies dance menacingly in the dark, at the feet of an apparently sleeping human. Another finds a nude woman with bird features and a cloud of keys for a head praying against a background of torn pony wallpaper, crumpled fast food containers and doll heads littering the floor. Click through to take a look at Immaculate Deception, which we discovered via This Isn’t Happiness, and visit Koszykowski’s website for more of her work.

Are You Ready for ‘Game of Ponies’?

By

It seems like video mashups of childhood standbys with current pop culture franchises are popping up everywhere we look — not that we’re complaining. We’ve long thought that the only way the Game of Thrones intro could be any better would be if it starred the cast of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Okay, you’re right, we’ve never actually thought that, but we’re definitely thinking it now, thanks to this incredibly well-executed mashup of the two television shows by YouTube user adecoy95, who actually has quite a few “pony parodies” up for your consumption. This is just what we need to tide us over until the Game of Thrones Season 2 premiere tonight. That and a few lemon cakes. Click through to watch the video, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Video of the Day: Care Bears vs. My Little Pony

By

In a battle of brute strength, agility, and rainbowed cuddliness, who would win – Care Bears or My Little Pony? Though the ensuing bloodshed is too horrific for cartoonist prodigy, Dan Meth, to illustrate, he does ponder what other 80’s toys would be like on the big screen. With Transformers 2 and G.I. Joe on the horizon, it is only fair (and logical) to imagine the blockbuster potential of such classics as “Cabbage Patch Kids,” “The Smurfs,” and the undeniable indie appeal of Wes Anderson’s “Teddy Ruxpin.” Care Bears would totally… Read More

What’s on at Flavorpill: The Links that Made the Rounds in our Office.

By

Today at Flavorpill, we relived last night’s amazing Happy Ending Music & Reading Series which featured Wells Tower, John Wray, Arthur Phillips, and Vampire Weekend thanks to our friends at Galleycat. We were shocked to hear that the Gossip Girl spin-off is dead. That sucks. We had a good think about the sexual politics behind Miss California’s nudie pics thanks to ex-Gawker editor Sheila McClear. We were proud of NYC teens for not falling for Bristol Palin’s abstinence b.s. We were scared of this hill with eyes. We couldn’t bleieve that Afghanistan only has one pig. And finally, we’ll take you out today with the live action trailer for MY LITTLE PONY: Reign of Buttercup Sprinkles. Catch it after the jump.
