It’s Friday, which means that another week is over — cue wild cheers! — and also that it’s time for another installment of our regular roundup of downloadable MP3 goodness from around the web. This week there’s a new track from the ever-prolific Johnny Jewel and Chromatics, along with Hype Williams’ suitably strange tour EP, various material from Australia, covers of varying quality from Wall and Nite Jewel, our very own Silent Drape Runners getting all Christmas-y, and various other action as well. Since all this costs precisely nothing, what are you waiting for? All the download links await after the jump. … Read More

It’s Friday, and we’re back with another installment of our regular roundup of downloadable MP3 goodness, both from around the web and from our own servers. In other words, there’s plenty of interesting sounds awaiting you after the jump, and since they won’t cost a penny or land you an RIAA lawsuit, as your attorneys we advise you to start downloading immediately. … Read More
We’re still far from recovered from the total insanity that became our lives for five days this week at the ever-expanding South by Southwest music festival that invades Austin, Texas once a year. The number and density of shows is staggering, and though there were times we wished we could hide under a rock and take a nap for a little while, some of the best experiences we had were entirely accidental. We didn’t witness Arcade Fire playing with Bruce Springsteen, but we did see a bunch of new, interesting bands that inspired and surprised us. We bet you’ll be hearing more about them soon. … Read More
It’s a simple fact: Valentine’s Day can get a little cloying. Even if you’re happily ensconced in a hand-holding, cuddle-snuggling, shrugs ‘n’ sighs sort of relationship, the singing teddy bears and candy can all get to be a bit much. That’s why, inspired by some deliciously moody and truly romantic (though not in the sense you may expect) new records from the likes of Berlin’s o F F Love and Flavorpill’s SXSW 2011 showcase standout Nite Jewel, we’ve crafted a mix of deep, dark love songs to get you in a more devilish Valentine’s mood. Owing more to the day’s roots as Lupercalia, the Ancient Roman fertility holiday, than the greeting card-bait February 14th we know too well, this is a mix of heart-crushing slow burners. Naturally, the playlist even ventures into the more “adult” side of love a few times. Whether you enjoy this music alone or with pleasurable company, a lot of red wine’s suggested. … Read More
Flavorpill’s joining the sweat, heat, and taco trucks of South by Southwest this year to throw a party with some of our best friends. Combining forces with The Musebox, I Rock I Roll and The Bell House NY, and sponsored by HP: Everybody On, we’ve pulled together a bunch of our favorite bands to play some music and liven up the Austin afternoon. So, if you’ll be making the yearly arduous pilgrimage to Texas, join us on Wednesday, March 16 from noon until 6 pm at Lipstick 24. We’ll have Flavorpill faves like Oh Land and Class Actress alongside bands destined to become your new favorites, like the genius, guilty dance-glee of Kids of 88. RSVP for the afternoon of awesome here, but do it quickly as we’re nearing event capacity.
To whet your appetite for the acts you’ll see at our showcase (or, if you won’t be in Austin, to enable you to party along with us from the comfort of your own home), we’ve curated a mixtape of songs from the bands who are performing. Check out the slightly twisted event flyer below, and view the mixtape’s track list, which you can download as one file for your listening pleasure. … Read More
