The result is surprisingly unsettling — lonely Tommy Ramone with his back against a brick wall, David Johansen and Syl Sylvain’s downcast gazes on the New York Dolls’ self-titled debut taking on a new, mournful meaning. New York-based, self-taught photographer Mike Schreiber’s unique vision of hip-hop celebrities, from Nas and Biz Markie to Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Jay-Z, is collected for the first time in True Hip-Hop.
Schreiber captures his subjects with a real-life grit that becomes seemingly tangible. Most jaw-dropping is the strikingly candid proof sheet presenting a vulnerable young artist then known as Maya Arulpragasam, who would use Schreiber’s photos as she rose to fame as M.I.A.

We’ve all crashed a party at some point in our lives, but very rarely do you have the opportunity to do so on live television for millions of people to see. Short film producer Elinor Burkett did just that during last night’s Oscar presentation for Best Documentary Short, latching herself onto the microphone in the middle of director Roger Ross Williams’ acceptance speech. Her intrusion and his shell-shocked look show the surface of a deeper story; apparently the two hate each other.
