Pic of the Day: Art Inspired by Stories

+

We love One Story, the refreshingly economical (both in terms of size and cost) program that publishes a single, generally excellent short tale every three weeks in the form of a tiny, stylish, monochromatic book. So we were excited to hear today that they’ve teamed with more than 30 talented artists to create the best fundraiser idea in recent memory: The painters, photographers, jewelry makers, etc. have each made original pieces of art based on stories from the One Story archive. Check out our five favorites and learn how you can bid on them after the jump.

Fiction Fix: “Wilderness” by Jean Thompson

1

The goal of each installment of the Fiction Fix is to present you with a bite-sized capsule of fiction. Operating under the assumption that novels require the kind of time commitment you may not have, we scour literary magazines and new story collections to recommend one (just one!) short story that is most certainly worth your time.

Jean Thompson, who gets called “America’s Alice Munro” so often that she might as well print up business cards, has a new short story collection, Do Not Deny Me: Stories, out this week. The second story in the collection, “Wilderness,” was featured last year in One Story, a literary magazine after Fiction Fix’s own heart — the brainchild of Hannah Tinti, they send subscribers one complete, excellent, free-standing short story every three weeks. Fiction Fix: Hurt People by Cote Smith

+

The Fiction Fix is your weekly dose of short story. If that’s not your drug of choice, too bad: consider it medicine. Every week, we’ll scour the literary magazines you don’t have time to read, online and in print, and let you know where to find one story worth reading.

This week we’re directing you to One Story #118, “Hurt People” by Cote Smith. One Story is keeping short story love alive by sending subscribers exactly what it says, one story, every three weeks. The magazine is edited by Hannah Tinti — you may have noticed we’re rather fond of her around here — and has published some of our favorite writers: Ben Greenman, Lauren Groff, Nam Le, Kelly Link, Kevin Wilson, and many more. Issue #118 arrived in a very special envelope touting Cote Smith’s publishing debut. Read what we thought of it after the jump. Read More »
