Harmony Korine’s controversial Spring Breakers goes into well-timed limited release this weekend. Reviews thus far have been mostly positive — to the befuddlement of your Flavorwire, since we found the film to be both a mixed bag quality-wise and a little troublesome from a messaging point of view. Then again, it could just be a matter of expectations — viewers aren’t just surprised that a Korine movie is sort of accessible, but that a movie about spring break isn’t just all-out terrible. You see, it’s not an event with a rich cinematic history; most movies about spring break are, for lack of a better word, stinky. But if you’d like to get in the mood for Spring Breakers, or just enjoy the debauchery from the safe, STD-free confines of your living room, here’s a roundup of spring break in cinema, ranked from worst to (relative)… Read More

Parker Posey Talks ‘Party Girl’ and New York City, 18 Years Later
92Y Tribeca screened the 1995 cult classic Party Girl last night, followed by a Q&A with its star, Parker Posey, led by writer and film programmer Miriam Bale. While the film is largely beloved as a screwball comedy, in retrospect Posey’s Mary is much more surprising and layered than she even needed to be for the movie to be a success. She doesn’t party as a way of self-medication or clichéd cry for help – she enjoys every moment of her existence, and, even in the end, never shows remorse for who she is, despite discovering her calling as a librarian. While Posey says that she didn’t improvise any of the film and gives full credit to the script, it is easy to see how she was able to carry such a role with such finesse. … Read More

Parker Posey Explains How to Deliver the Perfect Emmy Speech
As her recent appearance on Louie confirmed, even if the film world seems confused about what to do with Parker Posey these days, she’s still possesses the charm that made us fall in love with her 17 years ago in Party Girl. Her distinctive on-screen persona is put to good use in a new promo for this Sunday night’s Emmy Awards; playing a veteran acting coach named JA,N (Just Act, Naturally), Posey teaches her master class students everything they need to know about delivering the perfect acceptance speech — which includes giving Bryan Cranston a shout-out, holding the statue like you own it, and pretending to speak a foreign language. (Should you happen to lose, it’s apparently best to just nod knowingly, even if someone is literally throwing egg on your face.) Click through to watch JA,N in action, and let us know in the comments if you plan on tuning in on Sunday night! … Read More

The Morning’s Top 5 Pop Culture Stories
1. We’re oddly excited to hear that Parker Posey will be appearing on the upcoming season of New Girl as “a ‘shot girl’ at a party to celebrate the removal of Schmidt’s penis cast.” Given this and her recent stint on Louie, it seems like she’s finally making a long overdue comeback. 10 Classic New York City Counterculture Movies
Few cities capture the American imagination quite like New York, which explains why so many great films are set here. Time Out New York recently took on the estimable task of ranking the 100 best New York movies of all time, and we’re fans of just about everything they selected. But our most beloved films about the city will always have to do with its ever-changing countercultures, and although TONY included a handful of excellent examples (Paris Is Burning, Smithereens, Wild Style, etc.), we can’t help adding to the list. After the jump, we round up 10 classic New York counterculture movies, some of which may well be too campy, silly, or niche to belong on a “100 best” list, but all of which we consider required viewing. … Read More
Flavorpill’s Guide to Movies You Need to Stream This Week
Welcome to Flavorpill’s streaming movie guide, in which we help you sift through the scores of movies streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and other services to find the best of the recently available, freshly relevant, or soon to expire. Strange Love: 10 Weirdly Erotic Films
Nine ½ Weeks hits Blu-ray today — which means if you’ve been having fantasies about sleeping with Whiplash, performing a striptease to a Randy Newman-written song, and force feeding your loved one, then you should be a very happy person. While much of Adrian Lyne’s film reads as totally goofy and not nearly as erotic as the world was led to believe during its release in 1986 (the plethora of bad ’80s tuneage doesn’t help matters), there are a few glimmers of real sensuality. It doesn’t all add up, but it inspired us to explore other weirdly erotic films that take an unusual approach with their cinematic carnal pleasures. The darker, surreal, and completely unexpected await you below. … Read More
