Enter Pee-wee’s Secret Word of the Day Contest

Ever since Pee-wee and the Playhouse Gang came back to life on Broadway last fall, Pee-wee nostalgia has been in full effect. If you missed the live show in its limited-run, your childhood favorite is making its return this Saturday at 10pm only on HBO. (Check out the hilarious trailer after the jump.)

To help drum up the excitement, we’re running a contest inspired by the Secret Word of the Day all week at Flavorpill. But instead of shouting the Secret Word out loud, you have to find it online. For example, today’s word is “bow-tie.” Find it anywhere on the Internet and just paste the URL of the site here to enter the contest. We’ll be giving away a Pee-wee prize pack each day this week; stay glued to your inbox to hear if you’re one of our lucky winners! … Read More

Gallery: Great Showdowns in Film History

The pop culture-obsessed folks at Los Angeles’s Gallery1988 have done it again. We’re madly in love with Scott C’s new exhibition, The Great Showdown, at their Melrose location. The show, which runs through the 26th, features over 200 tiny watercolors depicting film’s essential match-ups, from highbrow stuff like Citizen Kane to cult classics such as Eraserhead to wonderful B-movies including Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Barbarella. (Lost fans may remember a similar series Scott C did to commemorate that show’s greatest tête-à-têtes.) See ten of our favorite showdown paintings after the jump and click over to Flavorpill for more info on visiting the exhibition. … Read More

Gallery: Witty Portraits of Our Favorite Comedians

A David Cross-as-Tobias Fünke figurine. A pyramid constructed in honor of Roseanne. A spooky, Cyclops Brian Posehn. A shrine to Pee-wee Herman that would fit right in at a ’50s diner. No, these aren’t images from our pop culture-obsessed dreams — they’re real-life works of art featured in Gallery 1988: Melrose‘s new show. Is This Thing On?, which runs through January 29th, compiles the comedy-inspired work of 100 artists. You can check out most of the artwork here, but we’ve picked out our ten favorite portraits, of ten comedians we love, after the jump. … Read More

Phone Book Sculptures of Pop Culture Icons

The work of Philadelphia-based artist Alex Queral repurposes old phone books for carving; using a very sharp X-ACTO knife and a little pot of acrylic medium for the detail areas, he creates incredibly detailed celebrity portraits out of pages of faceless names. “It can be quite tense work sometimes because it takes a long time to finish and when you cut something away you can’t get it back again,” he has said. “Nearing the end of the carving and then suddenly having it ruined by a careless cut can be pretty crushing. You have to start all over again.” Click through to view some of our favorite pieces. … Read More

Video of the Day: Pee-wee Herman, Professional Wrestler

Now that he’s back on Broadway, Pee-wee Herman has been absolutely ubiquitous — greeting fans on the streets of New York, robbing the M&Ms store with Regis Philbin, and appearing on the cover of Paper magazine. Still, we never expected him to pop up on WWE Raw. Yet that’s exactly what he recently did, opening the evening by announcing that the night’s secret word was ”ring.” Then, he was confronted by MTV Real World/Road Rules Challenge veteran, The Miz, who dresses in a T-shirt and underpants, thus alleviating our fears that any Pee-wee-related homoeroticism would be out of place in the professional wrestling world. … Read More

What’s on at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we watched Pee-wee and Regis rob the M&M store while wearing matching outfits. We were impressed by The Fresh Prince Project, a 24-song album by an artist who calls himself Dr. Tweenus Gonzo that’s inspired by the show’s first season. We checked out the latest project from the… Read More

What’s on at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we fell madly in love with Pauladeenisms. We looked at photos of pets dressed up like famous people. We wondered how many kids are going to try and grow mustaches after watching this Sesame Street clip. We learned some things we didn’t know about… Read More

What Your Bike Says About You

Do you ride a Yamaha V Star-950 cruiser with steel fenders and chrome-plated head covers? Use expressions like, “Nice steed?” Does the sight of an all-titanium bike frame get you randy? As you’ve probably heard by now, Pee-wee Herman recently made an appearance at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, cocksure and pedaling his big red bike. We were both pleasantly surprised and concerned over the combination: plastic tassels and bow ties don’t usually mix with ink, leather and chrome. But does the bike really make the person? Yep. Click through to find out what yours reveals about you. … Read More
