UPDATE: THR has revised the original story, explaining that Pirate Bay is not actually shutting down, it has just been “significantly altered,” as its tracking service has been removed. May the pirates live on.

The infamous and most popular bit-torrent tracker site, Pirate Bay, has shut down its torrent tracking service for good. The Sweden based site, however, was not deterred by the anti-copyright popo — they simply declared the tracking service irrelevant. As THR reports, “the operators said the evolution of peer-to-peer technology has made tracker sites like the Pirate Bay ‘redundant’ and that users wanting to share data . . . can easily do so using trackerless systems which don’t require a central list of online links.”
