Artist Vlad Quigley turned us on to our new favorite single-serving Tumblr: Cats That Look like Pinup Girls. It’s exactly what it sounds like, and it’s great. The blog comes from Australian retro shop Hurly-Burly — a clothing, costumes, and kustom kulture company that specializes in pinup-style duds and sponsors Miss Pinup Australia. See some adorable kitties get languid and sassy past the break, because you aren’t doing anything else right now that deserves your attention more. … Read More
Tumblr Pinuprdj has a simple premise: “Vintage pinups are the pinnacle of art. Robert Downey Jr. is the pinnacle of sexy. It’s not rocket science.” We spotted the saucy, strange vintage images featuring the Iron Man actor’s stubbled mug on website Inspiredocean and haven’t been able to tear our eyes away from them since.
It’s not the first time RDJ has flirted with frilly dresses — and loved every moment of it. The star appeared in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in drag. He told MTV, “Pretty much the entire opening of the film I’m wearing a Chinese dress Gui, which I enjoyed very much.” And who can forget John Hughes’ 1985 comedy Weird Science featuring a young RDJ as a high school jerkface wearing a bra on his head. Get your Robert Downey Jr. pinup fix past the break. … Read More
Pouty, pinup-style lips enthrall French artist Hubert de Lartigue. His hyperreal paintings — which are created with an airbrush for the perfect slick, lipgloss-approved sheen — are fetishistic fantasy portraits reminiscent of vintage glamour girl photos and sexy fashion magazine spreads combined. The artist has painted the rest of his models’ bodies before, but his images of curling tongues, pearly smiles, and puckered pouts seem far more enigmatic and seductive. It’s also interesting to see how much someone’s personality rests even in the delicate lines of their mouth. We shared more of De Lartigue’s incredibly detailed and realistic portraits past the break. … Read More
A busty, barely clothed woman. A sexy, reclining pose. A retro ’40s or ’50s hairdo. A come-hither stare. Vintage pinup-style photography has been so overused in the past several years that it’s basically a visual cliché. So it’s refreshing to see someone make it new — not to mention totally bizarre. Paris-based artist Hippolyte Hentgen does just that in portraits where, for instance, that come-hither stare emanates from the gigantic eye that replaces the semi-nude subject’s head. If you’ve ever wanted to see what mescaline might look like as a lady wearing nothing but a Bettie Page haircut and a Hawaiian lei, click through and enjoy — then visit Hentgen’s Picasa site to see more of her excellent work. … Read More
Not all librarians wear tightly coiled hair buns and fondle the card catalog like it’s going out of style (wait … ). Library professionals come in all flavors, and the Men of the Stacks project is aiming to change your preconceived notions. They’ve made a classy cheesecake calendar with 12 tasty librarians, because “there is an entire population of professional librarians out there who disagree with the way the library profession is perceived in contemporary media outlets and in the historical consciousness of the American mind.” All proceeds from calendar sales are being donated to the It Gets Better Project, which was created to show ” … young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach — if they can just get through their teen years.” Please take a moment to indulge in a little eye candy, which supports a very serious and positive message, below. … Read More
