Lovely Vintage Children’s Book Illustrations from Poland

We’re suckers for vintage books here at Flavorpill, not to mention anything Polish, so it’s hardly surprising that we’re completely charmed by these Polish children’s books from the ’50s and ’60s, which we recently spotted over at 50 Watts. The illustrations are as magical as you might expect from any fairy tale, but somehow bent, a little different than what we might expect, and all the cooler for it. Click through to indulge in the weirdness of vintage kids’ books, and let us know what you think in the comments! … Read More

Charming Vintage Soap Packages from Poland

We’re always suckers for great vintage design here at Flavorpill, and we particularly swoon over inventive package designs. So obviously, when we saw these adorable Polish soap packages over at BoingBoing, we were in love. It seems like little objects like soaps never get this kind of design attention anymore, unless they’re the very expensive kind (or you’re in a fancy hotel), so it’s nice to see the bright colors and sweet illustrations on these. We’re not sure about the pine needle soap, however — that might be a little prickly. Click through to see our mini gallery of cute vintage soaps from Poland, and then check out even more over at Accidental Mysteries. … Read More

Gallery: Polish Movie Posters for American Westerns

You may think Westerns are a wholly American phenomenon, but it turns out that foreign interpretations look pretty good too. Our pals over at the Rumpus turned us on to these amazing Polish posters for American Westerns created during the Communist era, and it’s fascinating to see these familiar, classic films considered and advertised in a completely strange and often seemingly incongruent way. Click here to see even more of these gorgeous posters, and if you still haven’t had enough, be sure to check out the book from which they hail, Western Amerykanski: Polish Poster Art and the Western. … Read More

Photo Gallery: Yola’s Renaissance-Inspired Street Art

Our new favorite Polish street artist (thanks to our friends at Lost at E Minor) is Yola, who creates modern frescoes, reinterpreting and restaging scenes from classic Renaissance paintings using models from his local community center in Praga, Warsaw. Of the mostly senior citizens he uses in his work, he said, “Inviting the folks from the day centre was supposed to be a slightly subversive act: as if entering a haven for Fallen Angels, all aged 60 or over, who end up in a day centre because they can’t cope with life in society. The society they contributed to throughout their lives and which now pays them back a pittance, not enough for a decent living. To be honest I was expecting human misery and what I found instead was a bunch of happy people.” Happy people, and a lot of talent, make for some pretty amazing art. If you can read Polish, or just want to look at more pictures, check out Yola’s blog here. Or just click through to see our gallery of his work. … Read More
