10 Literary Parodies That Work

Well, at least there’s one decidedly delicious thing to have come out of the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon. Quite literally delicious: this week sees the release of 50 Shades of Chicken: A Parody in a Cookbook, which details the sordid adventures of a young, inexperienced chicken as she gets her breasts and thighs handled by a chef — while serving up some excellent recipes for roasting chicken as well. It’s enough to make you snort that cooking wine right out of your nose. Inspired by this new and hilarious release, we’ve put together a list of ten literary parodies that totally work on their own merit — no mere joke books these. Click through to see which we chose, and if we missed your favorite parody, be sure to add it to our list in the comments. … Read More

Celebrated Works of Art That Are Basically Fan Fiction

Among other criticisms that have been lobbied at the inexplicably popular erotic novel Fifty Shades of Gray, many have complained about the book’s origins; namely, that it was envisioned as an alternate reality Twilight fan fiction, and the author, E.L. James, merely replaced all the names of the characters in order to make it marketable.

Fan fiction gets an incredibly bad rap in the publishing and book-writing world; Anne Rice, George R.R. Martin, and Diana Gabaldon have all spoken out against potential fan fiction writers using their characters for their own stories. And “real life” fic, where writers create stories about their favorite celebrities (and often pair them together romantically), are even more vilified. We don’t get where all the hate comes from, though — sure, reading about members of One Direction making out with each other can get kind of creepy, but lots of your favorite books, movies, and even musicals are technically borrowed from other sources! Here’s a roundup of some of our favorites, as well as some we can’t believe exist at all — let us know what you think! … Read More

If ‘Pride and Prejudice’ Was a Modern Autobiographical Web Series

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Or at least, so says the bright pink t-shirt that Lizzie Bennet’s mom got for her and her sisters for Christmas in “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries,” a new webseries in which Jane Austen’s most famous heroine, now a modern day grad student with a camera and an internet connection, tells you all about her life in true confessional fashion. Filled with appearances by characters you know and love (Charlotte! Lydia! Jane! Bing Lee!) and charming, super meta in-jokes (Charlotte’s mom and Lizzie’s mom met at a Sense and Sensibility book club), but still getting its bearings a bit, we’re excited to see where this series goes. Click through to check out the first four episodes, and let us know your verdict in the comments — and if you can’t get enough, check out head writer Bernie Su’s Tumblr for some insider information. … Read More

Would You Read a XXX Jane Austen Novel?

We admit, Jane Austen was fairly titillating to us as overheated teenagers. Romance and intrigue, ignoring your parents’ wishes. Not to mention: all that talk and no action? We could totally relate. But now, the folks at Jacket Copy have alerted us to a new version of Pride and Prejudice — and… Read More

5 More Terrible Pride and Prejudice Book Covers + A Great One

Last night on Work of Art, in a challenge that thrilled book-design nerds like us, the contestants were charged with designing covers for Penguin Classics. The winner, John Parot, made a gorgeous, colorful, semi-abstract image for H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine. But the real loser was Jane Austen: Two Pride and Prejudice covers landed in the bottom three, and one — Judith’s horrible backwards-script design — got its creator booted. It was a horrible picture, but we’ve found five real Pride and Prejudice jackets that are nearly as bad. Give them a once over after the jump, and then cleanse your palette with a gorgeous one we stumbled upon in our search for the very worst. … Read More

5 Period Pieces That Float Our Boat and 5 That Missed It All Together

After attending a screening of the pleasant, but unremarkable, Cheri(which stars Michelle Pfeiffer and opens in theaters Friday), we got to thinking about why period pieces have a bad rap. Is it the language? The unfamiliar customs and landscapes? It’s definitely not the lack of nudity. (We’re looking at you, Jonathan Rhys Meyers.) So we decided to put together our own list of the best and worst period films — based on box office success and our personal preferences — to see if we can find a common thread. Join us, will… Read More
