Top 5 Werewolves for Your Recession Blues

+

Werewolves are making a comeback, and it’s not just because of Jacob’s New Moon biceps. According to Bob Powers over at the Huffington Post, “the plight of the werewolf reflects the American economic mood at the current moment.” He goes on to imply that the saturation of all things vampire in the 00′s was the result of our supposedly thriving economy. Conversely, werewolves have to make do; they must “expend time and money to build a restraint system and fortify a safe room to keep from getting loose.”

Chick Lit Gone Recessionista

4

In a piece on Double X today, Sarah Bilston eulogizes chick lit, arguing that the genre was an early-aughts lark, no longer compatible with America’s newly blighted economy. But is chick lit dead, or is it simply in need of a budget makeover? Chiconomics: The Rise and Fall of Some Terrible Trends

4

We reported last week on the death of Crunk, as symbolized by a new website encouraging those with too much oral bling to sell your gold teeth. The heady days of glammed-up, outrageous fast fashion are over, says the media,  and the term recessionista has been coined and bandied about by pretty much every magazine in town. But its not only the glitzy and the trashy that are falling hard and fast — the heinous yet popular shoes, Crocs, have reportedly lost $22.4 million in the first quarter of this year, proving that there is a silver lining to these uncertain financial times.

The demise of Crocs got us thinking: what other terrible trends would we want to see banished to the proverbial fashion room 101? What other frightful fads would we gladly see extinguished by the financial firestorm? Find out after the jump. Read More »

Six Celebs Sadder about the Economy Than You Are

1

It’s time for Screech (Dustin Diamond) to stop making pornos, and get in on the Saved By the Bell reunion train. No stranger to the financial problems, is now being sued by an energy company. You gotta read the fine lining on those contracts: apparently utilities weren’t included, Screech.

Remember when Michael Vick was one of the NFL’s highest paid players? (We don’t either.) Well, now the ex-Atlanta Falcon-er is behind bars for his dogfighting operation and claiming bankruptcy. Ew. Read More »
