10 Cannes Films We Can’t Wait to See

Your Flavorwire has done its level best to hit the film festivals of note this year, but we’re afraid our travel budget was running a little too dry after Sundance and SXSW for us to make our way over to Cannes. (We’re even more disappointed than you are.) But we’ve been keeping a close eye on the reviews coming from the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, and have found plenty to get excited about in those dispatches. After the jump, we’ve assembled ten of the Cannes films we’re most looking forward to, with words of encouragement from some of the folks who were lucky enough to get a glimpse. (h/t to IndieWire, for their invaluable CriticWire directory of Cannes reviews.) … Read More

Video Essay: “Threequel: Even More Famous Faces in Their Film Debuts”

Well, I’m sorry, but we just couldn’t resist. After our first two “Famous Faces in their Film Debut” video essays took the Internet by storm, we found that with a bit more digging, we could unearth enough new goodies to warrant a third (but final, probably) entry in the series. So check out a squeaky-voiced Tom Cruise, a little tiny Angelina Jolie, an even tinier Robert Downey Jr., and a young (but somehow still old-looking) Tommy Lee Jones, among many other oddities, after the jump. … Read More

Check ‘em all out after the jump, and share your thoughts in the comments. … Read More

Rob Pattinson's Sexy Drama 'Bel Ami' Gets Summer Distribution

Just a few months ago, the trailer broke for Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s Bel Ami — an adaptation of the 19th-century Guy de Maupassant’s novel of the same name. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival last month with mixed reviews. Now, EW has reported that foreign and indie niche distributor Magnolia has acquired the period drama, which is set for a June 8 release. The Twilight star trades his romantic vampire for a sleazier character — an ex-soldier who sleeps his way through 1890′s Paris and rises to power by seducing the female social elite. The English actor appears alongside Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Christina Ricci for the sexy story — which has been described by Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles as a “well-crafted, appealing film with a terrific ensemble cast.” Watch the trailer past the break, and let us know if you’ll be indulging in a little international hedonism this summer. … Read More

The Funniest Reviews of ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’

There are two types of people who care about The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – those who are already lining up to get into tonight’s midnight screenings and those who are simply devouring the hilarious reviews of critics who never wanted to see the movie in the first place. For that latter group (of which we are most certainly a part), today’s crop of reactions are solid gold. While the general consensus seems to be that Breaking Dawn is too long and slow, with bad writing and no performances to write home about, it’s the details of the funniest reviews that will send you into hysterics. See Taylor Lautner compared to a pizza-delivering porn star and much, much more after the jump. … Read More
