Flavorwire’s Guide to Indie Flicks to See in August

Even among the mindless carnage and endless superheroes of summer, August tends to be a bit of a drag; studios put the blockbusters they’re less certain of in the late-summer slots, so for every Bourne Legacy, there’s sure to be two or three Premium Rushes. But that just means it’s an even better time to go off the grid and see what’s playing in the art houses, and indie distributors have stocked several gems into the upcoming months; check out our recommendations after the jump. … Read More

The Shocking Beards of Generally Clean-Faced Celebs

Now, we’re generally pro-scruff in all its forms, but his week, we stumbled across a photograph of David Bowie rocking a delicate, demure beard, and we were just a little bit shocked. After all, for all the man’s stylistic hijinks, we’ve never seen him with a beard before, and there’s something distinctly strange about it. Some men can transition in and out of beards with no drama, but some faces have become so iconic in their clean-shaven state that a beard is frankly unsettling. Inspired by Bowie, we’ve put together a collection of the most shocking beards that have popped up on the faces of generally bare-faced celebrities (whether in recent memory or in the willful days of their youth), after the jump. Click through to check out these surprising beards, and let us know if we missed your favorite (or if we’ve inspired you to rethink that summer scruff) in the comments. … Read More

10 Cannes Films We Can’t Wait to See

Your Flavorwire has done its level best to hit the film festivals of note this year, but we’re afraid our travel budget was running a little too dry after Sundance and SXSW for us to make our way over to Cannes. (We’re even more disappointed than you are.) But we’ve been keeping a close eye on the reviews coming from the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, and have found plenty to get excited about in those dispatches. After the jump, we’ve assembled ten of the Cannes films we’re most looking forward to, with words of encouragement from some of the folks who were lucky enough to get a glimpse. (h/t to IndieWire, for their invaluable CriticWire directory of Cannes reviews.) … Read More

Video Essay: “Threequel: Even More Famous Faces in Their Film Debuts”

Well, I’m sorry, but we just couldn’t resist. After our first two “Famous Faces in their Film Debut” video essays took the Internet by storm, we found that with a bit more digging, we could unearth enough new goodies to warrant a third (but final, probably) entry in the series. So check out a squeaky-voiced Tom Cruise, a little tiny Angelina Jolie, an even tinier Robert Downey Jr., and a young (but somehow still old-looking) Tommy Lee Jones, among many other oddities, after the jump. … Read More
