What’s on at Flavorpill: Links That Made the Rounds in our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we took a look inside of LA-based artist Mike Stilkey’s crazy personal library. We wondered what Vladimir Nabokov’s sexiest new work since Lolita was — does anyone happen to own a May 1969 Playboy? We decided that Japanese barcodes are just better. After reading this harrowing tale of a father and son lost in the waves, we were scared of the ocean. We got excited just thinking about playing Sgt. Pepper songs on Rock Band. We learned about the making of Tim Burton’s MoMA animation for his upcoming exhibition on the museum’s newly-launched blog. (The Whitney also relaunched their website. We likey.) We crushed on Cindy Sherman in this interview with BOMB Magazine. We wanted a pair of recycled metal sneakers. And finally, we couldn’t believe Matt Groening would out Milhouse at a party. We’d have a cow, dude.

Things That Will Happen Before Beatles Catalog Is on iTunes

With The Beatles: Rock Band and the band’s entire remastered catalog hitting retail shops today, it’s no wonder that we hear more rumors that EMI, the Fab Four’s floundering label, and Apple, ye proprietor of the country’s largest retail music shop, finally reached a deal to sell the Beatles catalog on iTunes. Sky News would have you believe it’s true, quoting Yoko Ono as their source. Of course, Sky News removed the link almost immediately after publishing, though not before a host of news services picked up on the story. Read More »

Today at Flavorpill, we mourned the loss of the world’s oldest dog — a 21-year-old wire-haired dachshund named Chanel. We found more rock reads to add to our ever-growing list and debated what the surprise Beatles Rock Band song will be. We wondered if a new HBO series that stars Steve Buscemi and is executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Mark Wahlberg, and Terence Winter could be anything but awesome. We were pumped for Georgia O’Keefe’s big fall. (By the by, which do you think will be better: the retrospective at the Whitney or the Lifetime Original?) We were jealous of Lou Reed’s new Hamptons digs. We got our mythological creatures all sorted out while listening to the new Jay-Z. And then… Gmail failed.

Angsty Hippies Rejoice: The Beatles: Rock Band!

2

Rock Band, in addition to providing hours of entertainment for talentless children, is a virtual means of living out one’s dream of rock stardom. (We’re more a Guitar Hero kind of office.) The latest installment in the series is The Beatles: Rock Band. While previous Rock Bands harnessed Gen X anthems (Radiohead’s “Creep,” Nivana’s “In Bloom,” etc.), the new game is clearly targeted for angsty hippie mamas and papas who “sold out.” Oh fine, the videogame is also geared towards the rest of the world, which seems to unanimously agree on The Beatles’ greatness. Three Words: Lego. Rock. Band.

1

Remember how we you asked you a few weeks ago what was up with the Lego overload in the design world? Well now we’ve uncovered something that takes the cake: a sort-of confirmation of the long-rumored debut of a Lego Rock Band game. We’re not sure quite how it will work (Will it be geared for the playground set? Will the instruments be MADE WITH BRICKS?!), but we love the idea of it. Find a hilarious video take on the concept after the jump. Read More »
