Glowing Netflix Reviews of Notoriously Terrible Movies

There are certain movies that we, as a culture, have outright rejected. Declaring an unironic love for Battlefield Earth or Gigli is social suicide in some circles — and no one in their right mind would admit to enjoying the hugely unsuccessful Paris Hilton vehicle The Hottie and the Nottie. And yet, because Netflix (especially in its streaming form) provides an endless supply of time-wasting media without forcing users to submit to the glare of a snobby video rental store clerk, it ends up exposing viewers to movies they wouldn’t consider watching otherwise. The site’s anonymous reviews prove that there is no such thing as a universally reviled film. After the jump, we’ve collected a handful of glowing Netflix defenses of notoriously awful flicks — some with odd political or moral agendas, some puzzling, some plain hilarious, and a few sarcastic but brilliant. … Read More

The Top 10 Big-Screen Gay Couples

We don’t mean to belabor our anger over Sex and the City 2, but there’s one more thing we just can’t shut up about: As any review will tell you, the movie begins with the wedding of Stanford Blatch and Anthony Marantino. We have nothing against Willie Garson or Mario Cantone, but come on: Carrie’s gay marries Charlotte’s? Really? As though there’s some kind of shortage of homosexual men in Manhattan? Plus, the ceremony itself (which features Liza Minnelli covering BeyoncĂ©, for heavens sake!) comes straight out of Gay Stereotypes 101.

If one good thing came out of our annoyance at this offensively implausible plot twist, it’s that it got us thinking about all the great same-sex movie couples we have loved. Peruse our ten favorites after the jump and add yours in the comments. … Read More

20 Gal-Pal Movies to Watch Instead of Sex and the City 2

We admit it: there was a time when we were as devoted to the original Sex and the City TV series as any other 21st-century girl. But then came the first movie, which was so fluffy and inane and contrived it seemed to negate any affection we could have had for Carrie and friends. Now, Sex and the City 2 has landed and promises to dominate the Memorial Day weekend box office… despite the fact that critics have declared it an irredeemable stinker. The movie’s current Metacritic score? Thirty-two. Stephanie Zacharek at Movieline calls it “a sad and ugly example of how terrific television can mutate into something that feels a lot like torture porn.”

So why are women lining up hours in advance to watch this demented spectacle? Many speculate that it has something to do with a lack of great movies about female friendship. While we would love to see more gal pals on the big screen, the Flavorpill staff would like to point out that there are a number of films out there featuring lady cliques we would much rather meet for cocktails. After the jump, check out 20 of our favorites. … Read More
