10 Best Picture Winners with Bad Posters

3

Brace yourself: soon Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” will be invading your brain all over again. James Cameron is releasing a 3D version of his sinking ship Titanic, and a new cut of the film means that a new poster has been released. We can appreciate the classic approach the studio is going for — particularly since the movie’s original one sheet always appeared as though the ship was about to devour Kate and Leo like Jaws — but it’s not the most flattering thing we’ve ever seen. The overused “Experience It Like Never Before” also doesn’t help. Cameron’s movie won the Best Picture Oscar in 1997, which got us thinking about other Academy Award winners that had terrible poster art.

Looking at film poster history overall, it’s interesting to note that Hollywood used to really play up the fact that they were adapting novels by featuring books in the artwork. Before the 1960s, the focus on hand draw images and more abstract concepts populated one sheets. Around the time of movies like Midnight Cowboy, stark photorealism became the focus. As frustrating as it is to survey the cruddier examples of poster art over time, movies like Kramer vs. Kramer were refreshing to note — they resisted the urge to do the obvious and rip the picture of the happy family in half. Not many studios would do the same these days.

Video of the Day: RISD Grads’ Slumdog Flash Mob

1

Remember your graduation? You were probably hung over, dying in the hot sun, listening to some TV news anchor go on and on about responsibility and potential. If only you had taken commencement into your own hands, like RISD’s class of 2010 did over the weekend. Sure, you may think flash mobs and Slumdog Millionaire‘s “Jai Ho” have been done to death. You could snark on the kids like UnBeige does. Us? We admire their exuberance… something we hope they’ll hang onto in the face of a scary job market for creative types.

What’s on at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

1

Today at Flavorpill, we browsed the affordable art prints and t-shirts in the newly-launched Threadless Artist Shoppe. We read what has to be one of the most hilarious (and highbrow!) Missed Connections posts of all time. We fell in love with the bear in the book trailer for Sloane Crosley’s new book of humorous essays, How Did You Get This Number? We discovered some Turkish bees that use flower petals to build their nests, resulting in these colorful little flower balls that look like quilts. We uploaded our Transformers 3 audition tape for Michael Bay. We were kind of grossed out by the idea that close couples can actually smell each other’s emotions. We enjoyed Brain Pickings’ esoteric Father’s Day gift suggestions. We wanted to take a ride in Jeff Koons’ BMW Art Car. We weren’t fans of Captain America’s suspenders and superjeans look. And finally, we found out how fast food mascots blow off steam on their night off. We never pegged Colonel Sanders for a pothead…

7

Over the weekend The Times of London jumped the gun by posting their list of the top 100 films of the decade. We agree with ArtsBeat’s Dave Itzkoff, who noted that their roundup, while diverse, feels “more provocative than definitive.” (In fact, if this kind of sweeping survey tends to get you worked up, you might be better off reading GreenCine’s list of the 25 most disturbing movies instead.) After the jump, we’ll reveal their top 10, along with a few films we think got the shaft.
