Amazing Brazilian Gym Posters Made From Old TVs, Video Games and Computers

Do you often feel as though you were made out of the gadgets you sit in front of day in and day out? We do. Enter art director Murilo Melo‘s gorgeous and inspired poster series for Brazil’s Companhia Athletica Gyms, by far one of the more creative nudges to get off the boob tube and onto the track we’ve seen in a while. Sure, when we saw these great posters over at Colossal we were more inspired to write about them on the internet than hit the weight room, but we’re no example for anybody. To create the figures, Melo dismantled hundreds of old televisions, video games and computers using their components to build the machinated humans who implore the viewer, “switch your routine for ours,” a tagline that works on so many levels. We don’t often have sports on the brain here at Flavorpill, but with March Madness raging and The New Yorker recently running Elif Batuman’s fascinating exploration of Turkish soccer fans, we’ve been thinking about them more than usual. Specifically, we’ve been wondering why most of the places we go to watch sporting events have to be so freaking ugly — especially here in the U.S., where the past few decades have seen many arenas trade architectural ambitions for branding opportunities. Photographer Jim Mangan liberates snowboarding from its commercial shackles in Winter’s Children, a collection of fine-art nudes shot in the back-country of Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains.

A former sponsored snowboarder, Mangan became disenchanted with the sport and was looking for a creative way to revive his enthusiasm when he found seven snowboarders willing to take to the slopes on circa-1980s boards, wearing nothing more than boots and colorful wool blankets. Mangan’s grainy 35mm photographs celebrate snowboarding by recalling its origins and capturing its unbridled ecstasy and free-wheeling spirit. … Read More
