The 10 Best “Credit Cookies” in Movie History

Iron Man 3 is out in theaters tomorrow, and it should come as no surprise that those who are willing to sit through the end credits — and seriously, they run something like ten minutes and include more names than a small-town phone book — will be rewarded with an extra (and very funny) bonus scene. Some call these little bonuses “credit cookies,” others call them “stingers.” In Roger Ebert’s Little Movie Glossary, Serdor Yegulalp dubs them the “Monk’s Reward,” defined thus: “A surprising final line or image, tagged on after the credits have finished rolling… so named because it usually takes monk-like devotion to sit through the credits to get to it.” The previous Marvel movies made a regular habit of including credit cookies, mostly as preparation for The Avengers, but they’re not the only movies to throw in a little something extra for those who stick around to find out who the unit accountant was. (Warning: minor spoilers ahead, but all for movies that have been out for a year or more.) … Read More

Watch Steve Buscemi’s PSA on Firefighters Affected by Hurricane Sandy

He may play a powerful, crooked Atlantic City politician on Boardwalk Empire, but Steve Buscemi was once among New York’s most heroic government employees: he was a firefighter. And he hasn’t forgotten his former colleagues. In a PSA to support Friends of Firefighters, an organization founded in the wake of 9/11, he points out that many of the firefighters who risked their lives to keep New Yorkers safe during Hurricane Sandy lived in areas that were themselves destroyed by the storm. “Firefighters are our first responders, and they helped save countless numbers of lives, and property, during the hurricane,” says Buscemi. Click through to watch the video, and visit Friends of Firefighters’ website to donate to their post-Sandy relief efforts. … Read More

Video Essay: “How to Pull the Perfect Movie Heist”

Tower Heist, Brett Ratner’s late-fall heist picture, is out this week on DVD, so our latest video essay takes a look at this durable genre via a step-by-step examination of how to put a big heist together — according to the movies, anyway. We grabbed pieces from over two dozen heist movies, from here and abroad, from the 1950s to the present, and put them together to show, in seven easy steps, how to pull that one big score. (Bonus points if it’s your last big one before retiring somewhere warm.)

We’ll show you how it’s done with the help of some of our favorite directors, including Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Michael Mann, John Frankenheimer, Bryan Singer, John Huston, David Mamet, Peter Yates, Jean-Pierre Melville, Jules Dassin, Sidney Lumet, John McTiernan, Jim Henson, and Frank Oz. The Morning’s Top 5 Pop Culture Stories

1. Tracy Morgan was taken to a hospital yesterday after he collapsed during a dinner at the Sundance Film Festival; apparently the cause of the incident was “a combination of exhaustion and altitude,” but according to one person who was there, Morgan “seemed out of control, yelling and falling onto the ground.” [via … Read More

Great Film Actors Who Became Great TV Actors

Whenever we find out that one of our favorite film actors has taken a role on TV, we’re intrigued. Why trade Hollywood’s red carpets and big paydays for the weekly grind of a regular television schedule? While some thespians can’t resist a juicy role on premium cable, others embrace the small screen as a way to regain the cred they’ve lost after years of disappointing parts in terrible movies. In honor of Don Cheadle’s surprising — and delightful — decision to helm Showtime’s House of Lies, which premiered last night, we look at ten great film actors who became great TV actors. … Read More

The Funniest ‘SNL’ Skits of 2011

Another year of Saturday Night Live has come and gone. We’ve celebrated holidays, strange news stories, and stranger politicians with the comedic troupe and their guests, and we have to say that all things considered, this year was, well, not so bad. There were even some real gems among the normal hurried junk that fans have been complaining about for years. Our Favorite Film Fans' Favorite Criterion Films

In retrospect, last week’s gift guide for movie geeks was seriously lacking in one important element: it needs more Criterion. The Criterion Collection, as you presumably well know, is the preeminent home video label for film nerds, lavishing their second-to-none skills of restoration and supplementation on titles both well-known and obscure. So yes, a week-late addendum: if you’re shopping for cinephiles, a title or two from the Criterion Collection should do the trick.

Alas, which titles? At 600+ films (and growing monthly), sifting through the collection is a daunting task. Thankfully, the label is more than happy to help out; one of the most enjoyable time-killers on their site is their section of Top 10s, in which film fans from across the spectrum — directors, screenwriters, actors, cinematographers, comedians, critics, etc. — select their ten favorite Criterion titles, often with concise mini-reviews for each. After the jump, in a bit of meta list construction, we’ve picked out ten of our favorite folks from that page, and a few of their recommendations as well. … Read More

The Best and Worst of Last Night's 'SNL' with Steve Buscemi

After a one-week hiatus, Saturday Night Live returned last night with the promise of a really weird show — or at least, that’s what we imagined when we heard Steve Buscemi was hosting. True, the episode seemed to contain an inordinate number of fake mustaches, but we felt Buscemi was a little underused. It’s kind of ironic — his monologue was about how psyched he was to have achieved success as a leading man after being pegged as the “creepy guy” character actor for so long, and then in almost all of the sketches he was the object, the guest, the frame — but very rarely the star. Sigh! Don’t worry though, he still got some good play, and though the show as a whole didn’t live up to either of our two favorite episodes so far this season (Melissa McCarthy and Jason Segel), it was definitely above average. Click through to watch our picks for the best and worst sketches of last night’s SNL, and let us know whether you agree or disagree in the comments! … Read More

Watch Steve Buscemi’s New ‘SNL’ Promo

We had really high hopes when we first heard that the always excellent Steve Buscemi would be hosting this week’s installment of Saturday Night Live, but after watching the newly-released promos for the episode, we’re suddenly not so sure — and we’re kind of embarrassed to discover that we’ve been mispronouncing his last name for years. Maybe he just doesn’t have good chemistry with Bill Hader? Maybe we’re just sick of Siri-related humor? Maybe his whole awkward funny schtick just works better in a different format? Who knows; it could just be that we’re a little cranky this morning. Click through to check it out now, and let us know what you think in the comments. … Read More
