Sundance Filmmaker Blog: Alicia Conway, Rite

Rite lead actress Tabitha Morella and director Alicia Conway talk to audience members after Rite/Grace screening at Kimball Junction.

Our third screening was yesterday afternoon, and in my absence, actor David Bickford did the intro and talked to people afterward. Production designer Cassie Allebaugh was also there. David tells me that the Egyptian was packed, with waitlist people being turned away — very good news for a screening during the second half of the festival.

Our last screening is tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Salt Lake City. David won’t be able to make that screening, so the plan was that Cassie was going to do the intro and talk to people after. She just called me, however, and told me that it started snowing yesterday and just stopped “two minutes ago,” and she’s staying up at Snowbird. Luckily, her plan today is to ski, because a park ranger told her he was sliding down the mountain in his 4×4. In other words, during a Sundance noteworthy for its mild weather and lack of snow, Cassie is snowed in! … Read More

We Wouldn’t Let Billy Bush Into Our Party Either [Sundance News]

True to the national climate, this year’s Sundance saw conservative buying, a green theme, and less exorbitant everything, including celebrity behavior. Making the biggest splashes thus far: Sin Nombre and An Education — two films about 16-year-old girls that embody the Obama age. [Variety]

Access Hollywood host Billy Bush didn’t have access to… Read More

Exclusive: Lauren Lee Smith Works Outside the Actor’s Box

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation‘s new addition, Lauren Lee Smith is no one-trick-pony. Rather, the statuesque talent has built a steady career out of versatility. Flavorwire’s Bess Devenow caught up with her in Park City, where she was promoting her latest turn as a woman grappling with psychological demons in Helen (opposite Ashley Judd, pictured in the still above). Ironically, shortly after the interview, Devenow shared a taxi with the film’s writer and director, Sandra Nettelbeck, who spoke very highly of Smith and her ability to go out of her comfort zone and tackle a meaty role.

After the jump, read on to find out whether blondes or redheads have more fun and what performance piqued her interest in acting at the age of eight (and we aren’t talking a role in a John Hughes movie). … Read More

Video of the Day: Public Humiliation of VIPs? Yes, Please.

We’ve had a long running crush on the Yes Men — Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno — which soared to unhealthy levels when Gawker revealed that they were the masterminds behind that faux New York Times stunt. They’re currently at Sundance promoting their sophomore flick, The Yes Men Fix the World, and our friends from the Sundance Channel have the behind-the-scenes interview with the prank-happy filmmakers.

Watch it after the jump and click here for more of the Sundance Channel’s video coverage of the fest. … Read More

Sundance Filmmaker Blog: Ry Russo-Young, You Wont Miss Me

Today was my last full day in Park City and it was once again a long, jam-packed day. I saw two films, Humpday and Sin Nombre; they were both great in totally different ways. The performances in Humpday were exceptionally funny and Sin Nombre reminded me of one of my favorite films, Days of Heaven.  The sky was beautiful in the late afternoon as the sun set behind the giant ski slopes. While I talked to my friend (and co-editor of You Wont Miss Me) Gil Kofman on the phone in a parking lot at 5:15 p.m., I was at last able to appreciate the quiet magnificence of twilight at a high altitude. … Read More

Exclusive: Bobcat Goldthwait and the Cast of World’s Greatest Dad

Given that conservative is hardly Bobcat Goldthwait’s middle name (hello, bestiality innuendos in Sleeping Dogs Lie), his latest movie World’s Greatest Dad (which he wrote and directed) was one of Sundance’s most highly anticipated films.

While WGD was rather conservatively billed in the Sundance film guide, Bobcat definitely had some clever tricks up his sleeve, including a racy freak accident and even full frontal from Robin Williams. Yes, you read it correctly: full frontal from Robin Williams.

It doesn’t stop here though. After the jump, tune in for the juicy highlights of Bess Devenow’s interview with Bobcat and cast members Daryl Sabara and Henry Simmons, including who came up with the idea for Williams to go full monty and who’s such a big Radiohead fan that he actually paid for In Rainbows. … Read More

Sundance Filmmaker Blog: Alicia Conway, Rite

The crowd gathered on Main Street for the Inauguration.

I am the walking dead. My eyeballs feel as heavy as croquet balls, like they’re falling out of my eye sockets. I have old woman posture, shoulders slumped forward and legs shuffling, head dropping as I nod off mid-sentence. It occurred to me much too late (like, yesterday), that I should’ve done a photo series of my eye bags: what they were like the day I arrived, fresh and perky, last Thursday, and then every day how they deepen and darken and look more and more like I’m being repeatedly socked in the face. Alas, missed opportunity. … Read More
