Most of us like to get in the Halloween spirit in October, watching scary movies and concocting gruesome costumes. But some people celebrate Halloween all year long. For them, there are horror movie tattoos. If you assumed there weren’t many people who would be down to see Pennywise or Leatherface every time they look at their upper arms in the mirror, then you’d be wrong — just about every major horror villain and monster is well represented among the inked masses. So, in honor of both the approaching holiday and Sunday’s The Walking Dead premiere, we present to you 25 tattoos that are nightmares made flesh. … Read More

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office
Today at Flavorpill, we remembered 11 douchebag writers in movies. We enjoyed Pete Souza’s portrait of a Presidency. We explored modern native art and culture, and listened to Powwow-Step. We watched a documentary about fan films. We discovered an exhibition that tackles Asian stereotypes in comics. We got… Read More
What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office
Today at Flavorpill, we found out who is the most stalkable on Facebook. We examined a few amazing, transparent animals. We spotted some crazy tattoos of politicians’ faces. We watched a video remix from Eclectic Method, inspired by the work of Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar. We got a few pop… Read More
25 Amazing Tattoos Inspired by Children’s Movies
An extremely worn VHS copy of The Goonies. A beloved E.T. doll that you’ve held onto since the ’80s. A delightful poster of Jareth, the Goblin King, that once hung above your bed. All of the above would indicate that you’re a devoted fan of these children’s classics, but they’re the kind of thing that you usually found lurking in the back of a closet, tucked away and forgotten in a dusty corner. For some people, that’s simply not enough; they want to proudly (and permanently!) display their fandom directly on their bodies. Whether you grew up on repeated viewings of Bambi or prefer more recent kid’s flicks like Up!, we think you’ll agree that the 25 tattoos we’ve rounded up here make quite a statement. Click through to check them all out, and if you happen to have some children’s movie-inspired ink, please tell us about it in the… Read More
Awesome Vintage Photographs of Tattooed Women
We tend to think as tattoos as a relatively new cultural phenomenon — but actually, that’s not at all true. In fact, scientists have discovered at least one generously tattooed iceman, dating from the fourth to fifth millennium BC. So we’d say the practice has been around for quite a while. But that doesn’t make it any less fun to look at these vintage photographs of tattooed ladies, proudly showing off their ink in an age when — if not exactly new — the practice was definitely not as accepted as it is today. Inspired by this post over at Juztapoz, click through to check out our gallery of a few of the tattooed ladies who paved the way for the rest of us. … Read More
Awesome Tumblr Alert: Illustrations of Tattoos and the Stories Behind Them
People with tattoos must get sick of answering strangers’ questions, but we’ll never tire of speculating about all the distinctive body art walking the sidewalk runway of the city’s daily fashion show. Thankfully, The Rumpus editor Isaac Fitzgerald has devised a way for us to satisfy our curiosity without being rude — and… Read More
Amazing and Intricate Tattoo Art from Berlin Artist Peter Aurisch [NSFW]
We occasionally feel that despite the fact that tattoos are clearly more socially acceptable and respected now than they’ve ever been, tattoo artists often don’t get the respect they deserve as artists. Quite apart from the fact that it takes a steady hand and nerves of carbonite high-tensile steel to inscribe your art into someone’s skin, the most accomplished tattoo artists have a dedication to their craft and a degree of skill to rival the masters in any other art form. With all this in mind, we thought we’d share the work of German tattoo artist Peter Aurisch, which we spotted via Lost at E Minor. Aurisch runs a Berlin studio called Nevada Johnny, and his work is distinctive and beautiful, a world away from popular conceptions of buxom sailor wenches and/or leering skulls. Check it out after the jump — there’s heaps more at his website. (Warning: although there isn’t any actual nudity, there’s enough flesh to make this most likely NSFW.) … Read More
Intense Photos from the Philly Tattoo Convention
Could you recognize a Philadelphia tattoo if you saw one? Maybe after flipping through these photographs from the Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention 2012 by New York-based photographer Eddie McShane you might. They’ll say, “South Philly” in large Italics. Just kidding. You will notice, however, that these particular ladies and gentlemen are covered with noticeably brighter ink. You will be torn between admiring these dense intricate body collages as a whole and getting snagged on a particular detail — Salvador Dalí peeking out madly from one gent’s waistline, Charles Manson wrapping around the rib of another, a hand portrait of a dog next to the actual dog, both gleaming with two sets of puppy eyes, aw. Check out Eddie McShane’s series from Behance and get some ideas. … Read More
Awesome Tattoos Inspired by David Foster Wallace
Today would have been David Foster Wallace’s 50th birthday, and we think it’s safe to say that the entire literary world misses him dearly. Wallace has some of the most rabid fans of any author — poring over details, reading hundreds of pages of endnotes over and over, latching onto every piece of lore and scrap of ephemera, building photo tours of all the Boston buildings mentioned in Infinite Jest. If you need proof, just look at how many posthumous works on or by Wallace have cropped up in the relatively few years since his death (another book of unpublished essays is due out this fall). Many of these DFW enthusiasts have even gone the extra mile and tattooed the author’s words, or representations thereof, onto their bodies, cementing their connection to the luminous figure for all time. We can’t say we blame them. Click through to check out the DFW-related ink on some very devoted fans, and, if you’ve got ‘em, let us know about your own literary tattoos in the comments. … Read More
Famous Portraits, Tattooed
In the art of Jean-Luc Moerman, tattoos are the great equalizer. The one constant across the Belgian artist’s diverse body of work is networks of interconnected, swirly shapes, often rendered in black on white. In his extensive Tattoo on Paper series, Moerman decorates famous portraits — Renaissance-era religious paintings, Rolling Stone covers photos, 1940s pinups — with these designs, tattooing the skin of subjects that range from Jesus to Kate Moss. These ink tattoos suggest a strange unity across centuries and art forms, and force us to examine timeless masterpieces anew. A few of our favorite works by Moerman are after the jump; visit his website to see a whole lot more. … Read More
