The Hangover Part II

The Morning’s Top 5 Pop Culture Stories

1. Instead of that Zombieland sequel that everyone has been talking about, word is that Fox and Sony Pictures Television are developing a “potential half-hour comedy” that’s based on the film. We wonder how much this decision has to do with the runaway success of the second-season premiere of The Walking Dead. [via … Read More

Open Thread: Which Film Series Are You Tired Of?

Late last week, Hitfix broke the news that Mike Myers will return to his most popular character for yet another installment. That’s right: The Love Guru 2! Ha, ha, just kidding, it’s Austin Powers 4. Meanwhile, the latest film of the durable Planet of the Apes franchise held on to the top spot at the box office for a second week, though a little further down the list, Final Destination 5 (the follow-up to The Final Destination, which apparently was not the final destination) disappointed, opening with the series’ lowest attendance to date.

That little dip appears to be an anomaly, though; the fact of the matter is, the top six highest-grossing films of the year to date (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Hangover Part II, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Fast Five, and Cars 2) are all sequels, which means the trend isn’t going away anytime soon. We here at Flavorwire spend an awful lot of time complaining about the glut of film franchises, but what about you, the moviegoer? Are you as burned out as we are? … Read More

Which Weekend Movie Is Right For You?

Now that summer movie season is in full swing, we at Flavorwire feel it is our obligation to help you navigate the week’s new theatrical releases. Going to the movies is an expensive proposition, what with the inflated ticket costs, extra charge for 3D, extra charge for IMAX, extra charge for RPX (anyone know what RPX actually is?), and gourmet restaurant-priced concessions. Nobody likes blowing that kind of change on a turkey, so we’ve worked up a simple, three-question quiz to help you determine which of the weekend’s films best fits your personality type. It’ll be fun! Take the quiz after the jump, and then peruse this week’s new picture shows with us. … Read More

The Morning’s Top 5 Pop Culture Stories

1. We may have to wait until next year for the new season of Mad Men, but at least we’ll have an added enticement: Jon Hamm is set to direct the premiere. “I watched [John] Slattery do it, and he handled it with such grace and ability and ease… I figured if he can do it,… Read More

10 Unconventional Movie Sequels

The Hangover Part II opens today, part of this summer’s endless parade of sequels — though, as we mentioned yesterday, this one is less a sequel than a scene-by-scene remake, following the structural format of the original Hangover as closely as possible without literally re-enacting it in Bangkok. Presumably, director Todd Phillips was just playing it safe. Not all filmmakers make that choice — and many don’t really have that choice, due to actors and other creative personnel who aren’t contractually obligated (as the Hangover boys were) to return. After the jump, we’ll take a look at ten movie sequels that were a little bit less conventional. … Read More

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we were surprised to discover that Napoleon’s brother Joseph spent part of his life in New Jersey. We liked Moviefone’s list of five sequels that are pretty much the same as the originals, which was inspired by The Hangover Part II. We were shocked by the total cost… Read More
