A few months back we pored over the trailer for Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lovely Bones. The film, which stars fifteen-year-old Saoirse Ronan as Susie Salmon (the murdered main character who narrates the story from heaven), Stanley Tucci as the local pervert/murderer, and Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon as her parents and grandmother respectively, looked promising. It was going to be scored by Brian Eno!
And now there’s this: a two out of five stars from Xan Brooks of the Guardian. His main issue is that Jackson leaves “the murder unseen and the rape unmentioned” in order to make the film palatable to mainstream audiences. We find this interesting as just last week we read that the director was adding more violence and suffering to the film after test audiences were “unsatisfied with the fate of one character.” We’re going to take a wild guess and say the scenes involve Tucci.

After getting a sneak preview yesterday, today the trailer for Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones is up and available for your viewing pleasure, with an introduction by Jackson himself. Fifteen-year-old Saoirse Ronan stars at Susie Salmon, the murdered main character who narrates the story from heaven. Rachel Weisz and Mark Wahlberg play her parents, and Susan Sarandon makes what we believe is her grandmotherly debut. Will nerds turn out for a post-LOTR Peter Jackson without the draw of a giant primate? This may help: Pitchfork reports that Brian Eno scored the film. It’s set to open in December — Oscar bait, of course.

Today at Flavorpill, we asked ourselves if graphic design has ever made us cry. We loved this ode to The Cutting Edge, but still can’t abide the sequels. We watched a sneak peak of the trailer for The Lovely Bones and lamented the absence of Ryan Gosling. We oohed and ahhed over downtown artist Terence Koh’s wedding photos. We searched for the perfect coffee shop in which to write the great American novel. We were impressed by Cinematical’s commentary on female screenwriters to watch out for. And finally, we LOL’ed at Voltromas The Transforming Tank Engine, but hoped that it wouldn’t give Michael Bay any bright ideas.
