What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we enjoyed the fact that Lady Gaga’s yoga mat was perfectly coordinated with her totally-inappropriate-for-yoga ensemble. We liked the idea of Tumblr as a bottle of red, but were less convinced that Gmail is the equivalent of caffeine pills. We watched nine minutes of the new ThunderCats series. We were surprised by some of the weird things that people say in bookstores. We found this photo of the original MTV VJs totally frightening. We had a hard time deciding which failed utopia was our favorite. We were impressed by an interactive piece of street art in Berlin that turns your smartphone into a cassette tape. We loved this story about a crested black macaque who snapped a rather flattering portrait of himself with an unattended camera. And finally, we took a time-lapse tour of Chicago’s canals, complete with a fireworks finale.

As Max Read’s post points out, various critics described him as “heavy-lidded and smirky” (The Washington Post); “a tad bewildered” (Moviefone); “mellow” (Entertainment Weekly); “distant [and] uninterested” (The Hollywood Reporter); “distracted” (Los Angeles Times); “bored” (BBC); “[in] a haze” (Time); “preparing for a remake of Dazed and Confused” (USA Today).

Today at Flavorpill, we saw the first official image from the Cartoon Network’s Thundercats reboot, which is set to debut later this year. We were intrigued by a rumor that Christian Bale is up for the part of Roland in Ron Howard’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. We almost hurled on discovering that Lady Gaga’s fragrance will be inspired by the smell of blood and semen. We found it telling that for most Americans, the most memorable part of last night’s State of the Union address was President Obama’s salmon joke. We wondered how long we’ll have to wait to have a Martin Amis sighting in Brooklyn. We watched Ron English kill Kenny. We listened to the Portland Cello Project perform an instrumental cover of Kanye West’s “All of the Lights.” And finally, we were excited to hear that Nabakov’s theory about the evolution of the Polyommatus blues — long dismissed by scientists — was actually right!

President By Day, Superhero By Night?

Comics creator Dean Trippe first gained a fanboy following with his webcomic Butterfly, which parodied the concept of the sidekick of a sidekick. Now he’s back with a series called “Barack Obama Looking at Awesome Things.” We’ve included our favorite pictures of Obama checking out comic book weapons — from Captain America’s Shield to Thor’s Hammer — that Trippe has created so far. What awesome thing do you think he should look at next?

Hulu and YouTube: Still Free, Home of Truly, Truly, Truly Outrageous ’80s TV

+

With remakes of V, the A-Team, and Red Dawn all currently underway, it looks like Hollywood’s really pushing ’80s-era action-adventure on us in a big way. But anyone between the ages of 25 and 40 knows that if you’re looking for some real nostalgia, it’s all about Saturday mornings. Though we may not have the wood-paneling in our basement to make the cartoon experience truly complete, we do have the internet, and before we start having to shell out to enjoy our TV on our computers (the way nature intended, obviously), here’s a look at just some of the shows streaming over the world wide web for free (Facts of Life lunchbox and Glowworm doll not included).
