What Is “Gay Voice”? New Documentary ‘Do I Sound Gay?’ Provides Plenty of Empowerment But Few Answers

Do I Sound Gay?, which opened the DOC NYC film festival Tuesday night and has since been picked up by Sundance Selects, is not a successful documentary in the traditional sense. Apart from superficial factors, like the insufferable repetition of its title, clunky humor, seemingly contrived footage, and some heavy-handed camera work, it forsakes the documentarian quest for answers — or even, simply, for depth — in favor of a neat, PSA-ish three-act narrative of empowerment. And yet, the ideas that surface in David Thorpe’s flawed documentary happen to be endlessly fascinating, and its message, which overwhelms the film, happens to be incredibly valuable. … Read More

50 Cultural Icons on What They Were Like as Teenagers

It’s hard out there for a teenager. It’s even kind of hard out there for those of us who used to be teenagers — especially in these back-to-school months, when the nostalgia comes creeping up like those floods we used to wear and never, ever should again. But you know who was probably even stranger than you in high school? Your favorite cultural icon. Or maybe not — as is only to be expected, some had joyful (and/or prank-filled) teenage years, some suffered tragedies, some were completely weird, some were popular, and some deserve our respect for even getting through. Click through to read 50 cultural icons on their teenage… Read More

Had enough of costume-clad superheroes? A Vancouver-based comic book company called Bluewater Productions specializes in biography books about everyone from Steve Jobs to Stephenie Meyer. What If Talk Show Hosts Embraced the Male Jeggings Trend?

As we may have mentioned earlier today, on Wednesday night Tim Gunn talked to Conan O’Brien about men’s jeggings. Which for some reason led Conan to promise that he’d wear jeggings for an entire show. Which he then did, last night. We think that the human race learned more about biology from the resulting big reveal than we did from yesterday’s discovery of arsenic-loving microbes. But it also got us thinking: What if this trend were to catch on? Click through for some interesting visuals of other male talk show hosts bravely rocking jeggings. Who do you think looks the most comfortable? … Read More

Will the Real Tim Gunn Please Stand Up?

We thought we knew Tim Gunn, we really did. He was the kind, gently critical, unfailingly intelligent mentor to the mixed bag of crazies and talented designers on Project Runway. We wished he was our teacher. If you asked us which celebrity we’d most want to have dinner with, he’d be near the top of the list. After hard days at work, we daydreamed about him calling with a pep talk, closing the conversation with his signature derective: “Make it work.”

But these days, Gunn isn’t quite so cute and cuddly anymore. In the past few months, he’s outed Anna Wintour for having bodyguards carry her. He’s called Taylor Momsen “repugnant” and the Salahis “sociopaths.” He flipped out at everyone for not protecting Gretchen after her team showed an awful collection. And now he’s had to remove from Facebook a 12-minute video rant about a challenge he didn’t like. In the words of Sassy Gay Friend, Tim Gunn, what, what, what are you doing? … Read More
