He produced the supernatural tale that takes place in Prypiat — an abandoned Ukrainian city near the location of the deadly Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster that devastated residents in 1986. Peli described how the threat of radiation and the location’s eerie, remote atmosphere made it the perfect place to set his new found footage horror film. In the movie, a group of tourists venture to the city on an extreme vacation, but soon discover they’re not alone.

Discovering DIY Creativity in the Backwoods of Michigan

Flying from JFK to Flint, Michigan — a crashed car-city that has been notoriously featured in Michael Moore films — for ten days of r-and-r and visits with friends and family, we quickly got on the road to Oscoda, a tranquil town a few hours north, on the sandy shores of Lake Huron. Restless from a daily routine of swimming and grilling food, we made jaunts to the local thrift stores, antique shops, cabins filled with crafts, and the Iosco County Fair to discover some DIY creativity. In the end, we brought home some quirky, marvelous finds and shared lots of laughs along the way. Of course, what’s a vacay without a camera?
