What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we celebrated some of our favorite library scenes from film and TV. We were excited to hear that Wikipedia will be joining the anti-SOPA blackout that’s currently planned for this Wednesday. We wondered what Coach Taylor would have made of Craig Finn’s solo debut, Clear Heart Full Eyes, which is currently streaming in full over at NPR. We tried to imagine who would want to take an Alaskan cruise with Kenny G. We asked ourselves if the latest poster for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is for real or some kind of inside joke. We lusted after this incredibly colorful typewriter. We found this manuscript version of Great Expectations almost impossible to make out thanks to Dickens’ unwieldy scrawl. We geeked out over this video showing how Google Image Search reacts when you begin your search with a transparent image. And finally, we were amused by these really old photos of very serious children posing with toys. What do you think it would have taken to get them to crack a smile? An iphone?

Today at Flavorpill, we saw 50 things that we will never see in real life (a list that includes a chihuahua wearing double cheeseburgers for shoes and someone with a Mrs. Doubtfire tattoo) over on BuzzFeed. We enjoyed Mental Floss’ roundup of 11 outrageously obscure West Wing characters who resurfaced on Twitter. We encountered what has to be the world’s most expensive business card, and were almost blinded by the glare from all of the diamonds. We were incredibly excited to discover Fred Armisen doing an AMA on Reddit. We wondered how long it will be before 3D photos of people’s babies (or vacations or wild Friday nights) take over our Facebook feeds. We discovered that Margaret Cho’s childhood basically sucked. We got an interesting writing prompt from one of our favorite writers of all-time: the lovely Aimee Bender. We were curious if Chicago’s Anti-Superstition Society still meets to drink whiskey on Friday the 13th. And finally, we decided that we’d like to see Roseanne and David Bowie on Vulture’s wishlist of 30 Rock guest stars. Who would you add?

Today at Flavorpill, we discovered that if you’re in a jam, Pepto-Bismol can double as blush. We loved this contestant’s reaction to getting through the first round on The Price Is Right — particularly the part where she bowls over poor Neil Patrick Harris. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on one of these DIY Polaroid camera kits. We decided that the fact that Kristen Bell decided to dress up like Katniss Everdeen on her 30th birthday makes us love her even more than we did before. We found out that K names are going to be very popular this year. We listened to Murray Gold, composer and arranger of the music for Doctor Who since the 2005 reboot, play “I Am the Doctor” on the piano. We tried to imagine how we’d react if we found a life-size replica of E.T. washed up on the shore. We watched a really awkward old interview with Beck. We learned that there’s not really a difference between ketchup and catsup — and that the recipe for the sauce didn’t include tomatoes until the 1800s. We enjoyed Stereogum’s roundup of 10 classic albums released 10 years into a band’s career. We couldn’t not take this Downton Abbey personality quiz. And finally, we completely disagreed with The Awl’s ranking of The OC’s characters — mostly because they left Anna off their list completely and were entirely too fond of Kaitlin Cooper.

Today at Flavorpill, we took a tour of the Trumps’ incredibly gilded penthouse. We discovered that Snooki was wrong when she claimed that whale sperm is what makes the ocean so salty. We knew a few people who could stand to read Total Film’s exhaustive guide to The Hunger Games. We were excited to see Mayim Bialik recreate her Sassy cover photo from 1992. We were amazed by these “neon signs” made out of glowing E. coli. We vicariously ventured into an unguarded strategic military rocket motor factory near Moscow. We were surprised to learn that Ernest Hemingway once shopped at Abercrombie and Fitch. We were impressed by President Obama’s lovely handwriting. We imagined what Twilight would have been like if it had been penned by one of these literary greats. And finally, we decided that it was worth exploring The Daily Beast’s roundup of 31 ways to get smarter in 2012, especially as it involves playing more Words With Friends.

Today at Flavorpill, we wondered how this clip of Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler, and Weird Al covering The Beatles’ “Come Together” on New Year’s Eve in a restaurant on Maui came to be. We started speculating about what Apple might be planning to announce at a media event in New York later this month. We were happy to hear that Aretha Franklin is engaged to her longtime boyfriend Willie Wilkerson. We experienced a year’s worth of backpacking around the world in just five minutes. We wished that we’d had this awesome Lego machine when we were kids. We were impressed by Michael Chrisman’s timpelapse pinhole photo of Toronto — an image that he spent an entire year capturing. We were surprised by how well The Lion King mashes up with The Dark Knight Rises trailer and Van Gogh’s Starry Night goes with the Bat signal. We found out how 30 Rock plans on addressing the death of Kim Jong-Il in the coming season. We got a shot-by-shot look at all of the old adventure movies that the opening scenes of Raiders of the Lost Ark borrows so heavily from. And finally, we were thrilled to see that first episode of the second season of Portlandia — which officially premieres on IFC this Friday — has already landed online. We’ve missed Toni and Candace so much!

Today at Flavorpill, we fell in madly love with the SNL Christmas card thanks to its delightful Stefon-meets-Rockwell-painting premise. We got a better idea of what 7 billion people looks like. We watched a very hairy Jeff Tweedy do his best impression of a weather dude. We wondered if BuzzFeed had a hard time narrowing down its list of the 20 most important cats of 2011. We were afraid that our Kindles might secretly be spying on us. We hoped that Stephen Daldry’s plans to turn The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay into an HBO miniseries actually pan out. We couldn’t decide which Golden Globes-related tweet we found funnier: the heartbreaking original by Jason Segel or Neil Patrick Harris’ hilarious followup. We read The New York Times’ 1949 review of George Orwell’s 1984 in which the book is referred to as “a work of pure horror, and its horror is crushingly immediate.” We made note of The Hairpin’s helpful advice for festival holiday boundary setting. We were excited to see that Kanye has returned to Twitter. We checked out the latest from Banksy, a pixelated new sculpture called Cardinal Sin. And finally, we decided to end our day with this excellent “at the end of the day” supercut from VH1. We have but one complaint: needs more Mob Wives.

Today at Flavorpill, we wished that we’d find a baby seal parked on our couch. We wanted most of the outfits that we spotted in the Fug Girls’ roundup of the year’s most stylish celebrities over on The Cut. We found this image of Matt Damon in an ugly Christmas sweater totally endearing. We previewed a clip from TLC’s new reality show Geek Love. We thought these breast cancer awareness ads starring Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, Storm, and Catwoman were pretty amazing. We got a little misty-eyed while watching this tribute to the film personalities who we lost this year by Turner Classic Movies. We tried to imagine being stuck on a cruise ship with R. Kelly on purpose. We wondered what the fact that there’s no new must-have toy this year might mean — other than fewer mobs. We were curious if these video game cakes taste as good as some of them look. And finally, we decided that tonight we’re going to be watching the The Star Wars Holiday Special in its entirety, complete with the original commercials and an appearance by one Beatrice Arthur. Thank you, MetaFilter.

Today at Flavorpill, we looked at some of the great posters that excited fans have already created for The Dark Knight Rises. We watched a crazy “daytime fireworks” show at the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha courtesy of Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. We planned to set aside a few hours to check out all of the features in Longform’s best of 2011 list. We were horrified by most of the spots in Adweek’s roundup of the year’s freakiest commercials — including David Lynch’s bizarre conversation with a dismembered Barbie head. We examined the lesser-known fruits of Miss Piggy’s literary career. We met some of the year’s least photogenic criminals. We couldn’t decide who we’d bet on if this epic fight between Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin ever went down. We hoped that this woman with the Drake tattoo on her forehead is somehow secretly fooling us all. We got our first official look at Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and the photos are a lot prettier than what we’d previously seen snapped on set. And finally, we realized that giving a kid an intentionally crappy Christmas gift and then taping their reaction is not only mean — it’s potentially dangerous.

We discovered that Charleston has more hot people than any other American city, at least according to Travel + Leisure. We were surprised that Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was the both most- and least-favored Person of the Year in TIME’s annual poll. We couldn’t believe that Russell Brand is supposedly getting his own animated series — will this trend ever stop? We met the “Krampus,” a mythical monster so scary that it was banned from Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations Christmas Special. We were impressed by the amount of detail in this Lord of the Rings-inspired nail art. We saw some new work from Banksy in Liverpool. We wondered how quickly these mini models of Jeff Koons’ BMW art car will sell out. We looked at some of the highlights of the 2011 Black List. We were excited to hear that funny lady Rachel Dratch is working on a book that will come out this spring. We wanted to take a bite out of a few of these brains. We couldn’t believe that an escalator that features the Star Wars opening crawl exists in Tel Aviv. And finally, we were thoroughly depressed after spotting this visualization of student loan debt in 1990 vs 2000 vs 2011 on Mother Jones’ tumblr. Now you can be too!

Today at Flavorpill, we decided that these have got to be the most hardcore holiday decorations that we’ve ever seen. We heard that NYU will be offering a course on Occupy Wall Street next semester. We wished that Will Ferrell would make a free commercial for us. We learned some interesting things about the way that Pixar works. We watched a funny outtake from Louis CK’s upcoming comedy special. We read an interview with Carrie Brownstein in which she discusses why she loves Portland. We wished that The Lonely Island guys were really releasing a Christmas album. We were happy to see that the viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight Rises is already underway thanks to a pair of leaked “CIA documents.” We rather enjoyed this clip which reimagines Angry Birds through the eyes of Guy Ritchie. And finally, we decided that this guy who has 15,000 websites tattooed on his body has to be faking us all out. Right?
