This week’s release of T. Cooper’s Real Man Adventures, a heartfelt memoir with a sexy, pulp fiction-inspired cover, inspired us to seek out the sexiest book covers of all time.… Read More

The Many Covers of Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’
Don’t put all your Halloween decorations away yet — we have one more gothic hero to celebrate. Today would have been the 165th birthday of Bram Stoker, creator of the world’s most famous vampire (sorry, Angel) Count Dracula. To celebrate his birth, and the birth of his most enduring creation, we’ve put together a slideshow of some of our favorite Dracula covers, from the time of its original printing in 1897 to today. And hey, after you’re finished soaking in the vintage book cover art, why not delve into the many free editions of Stoker’s back list available online? It’s the best of both worlds. … Read More

Happy Halloween, lovers of 1970s horror fiction! And the rest of you too, we guess. Beautiful Book Cover Collages of Famous Titles
We’re always on the lookout for beautifully reimagined book covers, and Greek designer Christos Kourtoglou’s collages certainly fit the bill. The artist’s atmospheric works — which we first spotted on Booooooom — combine collage illustrations, drawing, and inky text in a simultaneously playful and sophisticated, bold and delicately detailed series of book covers. The Constructivist-style images and surreal touches renew our appreciation for several famous titles — all of them featured in our gallery, below. See Kafka, Burroughs, and others as lyrical collages past the break. … Read More
Stylish Cover Designs for Hogwarts Textbooks
Harry Potter fans know a whole lot about what’s inside the books Harry, Hermione, and Ron read at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But how about their covers? Aside from some dusty tomes in the film adaptations, they’ve mostly been left to our imaginations — until now. A talented 16-year-old designer named Allysah has created a series of stylish covers for the young wizards’ textbooks, which we discovered via The Mary Sue, and that makes us wish we could actually purchase these volumes. Click through to see the designs, and follow Allysah on Tumblr for more excellent Harry Potter superfandom. … Read More
The Greatest Novels of All Time Redesigned to Fight Illiteracy
We’re suckers for great book covers here at Flavorpill — not to mention great book cover redesigns – but this morning we’re swooning for a good cause. Belgian graphic design studio beshart has rallied 100 artists from 28 countries to redesign the book covers of the greatest novels of all time (according to The Observer‘s 2003 list of the 100 Greatest Novels of All Time) in order to raise awareness for the problem of illiteracy. The project, DoeDeMee, which we were tipped off to by Largehearted Boy, has collected a slew of amazing new covers, which you can buy as posters here. Click through to see some of our favorite redesigns, and then head here to see the entire set. … Read More
The Selected Tenenbaum Library
It seems that pretty much everyone in Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums has written a book or two — after all, how else are a family of geniuses and their assorted hangers-on supposed to entertain themselves? To remind you of their collective brilliance, Criterion posted this collection of books and magazine covers (the one featuring Eli Cash as the “James Joyce of the West” made us giggle). So add that, and the rest of the books on this list, to our ever-growing stack of fictional books we wish we could read. So now, if someone, preferably a genius, could take it upon themselves to actually write these, we’d be very appreciative. … Read More
Beautiful Editions of Fictional Non-Fiction Books
As much as we love books of fiction around here, we’re almost as fond of fictional books. So obviously we are more than charmed by this project by designer Daniel Gray, which we spotted over at i09. Gray has created a “publishing house” entitled Vulture Books, which publishes “classic non-fiction texts* illuminating the darker corners of human thinking, published as paperbacks for the first time. Ideal for sharing, pocketing and inducing metaphysical despair. *texts may or may not actually exist.” The vulture himself was designed to “sit alongside Penguin and Pelican books. He looks a bit malevolent, but still has a cheeky glint in his eye.” Indeed. Click through to check out the first run of Vulture books (and see which ones you recognize) and then be sure to head over to Gray’s website to see even more of his work. … Read More
The Very Best of Book Cover Design
There’s nothing we love more here at Flavorpill HQ than judging books by their covers. Be it plausible-seeming but tonally inappropriate covers or dust jackets that scream “don’t date me!”, we admit that it’s awfully fun to pooh-pooh the cliché adage. Dear readers, mark your calendars, for today — thanks to your help — we’re going to set all snark and judgement aside and take a look at excellent reads that also happen to have extraordinarily well-designed covers.
In honor of the adorably outfitted, exceptionally designed (inside and out) Prius c, design love is all around, so join us as we round-up engaging prose combined with exceptional design. Showcasing the work of legendary typographers, art directors and graphic designers alike, click through to see what stunning contributions the literary world has made to design, and vice versa. 25 Awesome Minimalist Book Covers
Here at Flavorpill, we’re pretty much suckers for any kind of minimalist design — minimalist representations of your favorite children’s stories, minimalist posters for iconic TV shows, or minimalist memes. So when Abe Books created a gallery of modern minimalist book covers they liked, we were inspired to put together one of our own. There’s something so satisfying about the minimalist style — modern design is often hectic and showy, and while that can be beautiful, we tend to agree with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who said “A designer knows that he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Click through to feast your eyes our gallery of amazing minimalist book covers, and let us know if we missed your favorite in the comments. … Read More
