David Bowie’s Rare Fashion Disasters: A Career Retrospective

As you’ve probably gathered, we’re pretty big David Bowie fans here, and we’re as much in awe of his sense of style as everyone else. Still, even the greatest aren’t immune to fashion missteps — a fact that we find perversely reassuring, if we’re honest — and as proof, here’s a selection of photos of Bowie captured in moments when the mask wasn’t sitting quite as elegantly as it might have… Read More

Is David Bowie Going to Tour or Not? A Review of Evidence

Ever since The Next Day was announced, there’s been no end of speculation over whether or not its creator would be playing live shows. Clearly, the answer we’re all fervently hoping for is “Yes,” especially if, like your correspondent, you’ve never seen the great man play live. Bowie himself has remained steadfastly silent on the question of whether or not he’ll tour, and as such, the music press has been seizing on any and every utterance from people close to him on the subject. We’re not immune to the excitement, of course, so here’s a roundup of everything that’s been said. And our verdict? It’s looking more promising by the day, put it that way. … Read More

A Journey Through the 12 Ages of David Bowie

As we noted earlier this week, David Bowie’s ever-evolving image has been the subject of more interest than pretty much any musician we can think of. Part of the reason for this, of course, is that it’s just so damn interesting — over the course of his career, Bowie’s moved from persona to persona like he’s trying on new coats at the thrift store, creating an image that’s always changing and always fascinating. As such, as part of Flavorwire’s David Bowie Week™, we thought we’d start at the beginning and go on a journey through the life of his most memorable incarnations. You’re more than welcome! … Read More

A Selection of Great Underrated David Bowie Tracks

If you hadn’t guessed by now, we really do rather like David Bowie, and we’ve been on something of a Bowie binge in the lead-up to the release of The Next Day. In the process, we’ve ended up revisiting some material that we haven’t heard in quite some time — with such an extensive back catalog, it’s inevitable that some songs and records get neglected, so it’s been a pleasure to listen again to some of the more oft-forgotten corners of Bowie’s discography. We thought we’d share some of our favorites — do let us know what yours are! (And yes, we even revisited Tin Machine. Pray for us.) … Read More

‘The Next Day’: Meet David Bowie’s Final Incarnation, Meta-Bowie

David Bowie’s penchant for periodic stylistic skin-sheddings has been analyzed nearly as much as his music, so much so that it’s become something of a music industry cliché to call him a “chameleon” or a “master of reinvention.” As such, part of the interest in his unexpected return was the possibility of a new incarnation for its creator. Would a new album bring a new Bowie? Well, now that we’ve had a chance to digest The Next Day, it appears that the answer is: yes. And no. … Read More

John Vanderslice on Covering Bowie and Why Kickstarter Is “Just As Involved As Some Labels”

Indie veteran John Vanderslice has long been a Flavorwire favorite, so our ears most definitely pricked up when we heard he was self-releasing two new albums this spring, especially since one of them is a full-length cover of David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs. The albums are both financed by a Kickstarter, which hit its $18k target within days — it was sitting at $54k when we spoke to Vanderslice yesterday, with some three weeks to go. In a lengthy interview, he gave us a fascinating insight on the mechanics of Kickstarter, the ins and outs of financing an independent album in 2013, and his career as a long-term Bowie obsessive. … Read More

10 Reasons Why David Bowie and Tilda Swinton Are Actually the Same Person

In case you missed it, the new David Bowie video dropped this morning, and it co-starred none other than Tilda Swinton, who we’ve long suspected of being, y’know, David Bowie. It’s the first time that we’ve actually seen Swinton and Bowie in a room together, and it goes some way to dispelling our cherished theory that they’re actually the same person. Or does it? It’s amazing what you can do with CGI these days, after all, and we’re still not entirely convinced. Anyway, we’re clearly not the only people to whom this idea has occurred, and so we thought we’d enlist the assistance of Nat Baruch, who runs the excellent Tumblr Tilda Stardust, to help us in our examination of ten reasons why the two are one and the same. … Read More

Terrifyingly Realistic David Bowie Dolls

Look, we love David Bowie as much as the next man (and quite possibly a whole lot more so), but there’s something terrifying about these dolls, which we spotted via the ever-fascinating Dangerous Minds. The creepily realistic thin white homunculi are the work of one EV Svetova, who goes by the handle Katyok on DeviantArt. As per her site, “I do not make the dolls, neither do I sell them” — what she does do, however, is craft the mannequins into amazingly detailed pieces, so much so that you kinda expect them to start walking and talking and making dire predictions about only having five years left to cry in. … Read More

The Most Beautiful Cover Art from David Bowie's Singles, 1972-1984

You may have noticed that we’re big fans of David Bowie here at Flavorpill, and as such we were excited (and just a bit jealous) to read about a new exhibition of the artwork from the singles he released between 1972 and 1984. In total, Bowie released 45 45s during this time, almost all of them good — and their artwork chronicles their creator’s aesthetic evolution, from Ziggy Stardust through the Thin White Duke and the cracked Pierrot of “Ashes to Ashes.” We asked exhibition co-curator (and designer/punk historian) Toby Mott to choose his favorite sleeves and share some recollections of the times they evoke.… Read More

Idiosyncratic Illustrations of Memorable Musical Collaborations

We’ve written a bit about unexpectedly awesome musical collaborations here on Flavorwire over the years, and as such, we were rather taken by these illustrations of some such collaborations. They’re by artistic duo Pol and Sakiroo Choi, and we spotted them via Thaeger, whose write-up of the pieces may or may not be interesting reading, depending on how good your German is. Anyway, click through and check out some of our favorites — there’s Run-DMC and Aerosmith, Kanye West and Daft Punk, and various others (but not, sadly, David Bowie and Mick Jagger, although maybe some things are better left un-illustrated. … Read More
