10 Fascinating Early Demos by Famous Musicians

We do still read the NME, god help us, and as such we were interested to see this feature about dodgy demos of classic songs on their website a couple of days back. Setting aside the question of whether anything ever recorded by Muse can ever be considered a “classic” (spoiler: no), the piece did get us thinking about early demos from our favorite musicians, especially in light of the recent reissue of Interpol’s Turn on the Bright Lights, which comes with a bunch of studio outtakes and other rarities. Anyway, we thought we’d run with the idea and share some early demos by some of our other favorite bands, which we think make for pretty fascinating listening. Let us know if you have any you’d like to share. … Read More

10 Amusing TV Theme Song Covers by Famous Musicians

If you were watching Late Night With Jimmy Fallon the other night, you might have been rather taken aback and amused by special musical guest Alicia Keys’ choice of song. Instead of performing one of her hits, she broke out a cover of the theme song to 1980s Disney TV series Adventures of the Gummi Bears. The bizarre spectacle got us thinking about some of the other covers of TV themes that have surfaced over the years — surprisingly enough, there aren’t that many to choose from, especially once you set aside the inexplicable ’90s/’00s trend of dire punk bands doing self-consciously goofy TV covers for reasons only they can explain. Still, there have been some to buck the trend, so here’s a New Found Glory-less roundup of famous bands doing TV theme songs for your listening pleasure. Did we miss any? … Read More

The Embarrassing, Hilarious Past Lives of Pop Culture Stars

Many celebrities got their start doing some pretty embarrassing things. While we can totally picture Alison Brie as a party clown, you won’t believe which actor once fronted a New Wave… Read More

Andrew WK, Kristen Schaal, Anthony Bourdain, and Other Familiar Faces Star in Joey Ramone’s “New York City” Video

The idea of another posthumous Joey Ramone album may trouble us, but a new music video for a track off “…yaknow?” has forced us to admit that it’s not all bad. Directed by Greg Jardin, “New York City” is a stop-motion homage to Ramone’s hometown, juxtaposing more than 100 locals wearing the band’s signature leather jackets with over 1600 photographs taken throughout the boroughs. Among the participants are a whole lot of famous New Yorkers, from Anthony Bourdain and Andrew WK to Kristen Schaal and Reggie Watts. Music fans will will recognize members of Les Savy Fav, the Dictators, Matt & Kim, and The Drums. And, of course, Ramone’s band mates and collaborators — including Tommy Ramone, producer Ed Stasium, and Joey’s brother Mickey Leigh — also appear. However you feel about the album, the video is a loving tribute that’s sure to strike a chord with New Yorkers and Ramones fans alike. … Read More

Excellent Photos of Awesome Musicians Hanging Out Together

One of our favorite features run by our friends at excellent UK website The Quietus is their regular excerpts from the Rock’s Back Pages archive. They recently exhumed an old article from the NME, wherein Nick Cave, Shane MacGowan, and Mark E. Smith held a “summit” at a south London pub. As it turns out, we happen to own this exact NME – we found it for $1 in a second-hand record shop years ago — and leafing through the article again got us thinking about similar great meetings of the minds that have been caught on film over the years. We’ve put together a gallery of some of our favorites, with grateful acknowledgment for the title and a few of the shots to the wonderful Tumblr Awesome People Hanging Out Together. … Read More

Ranking Intergenerational Musical Collaborations from Best to Worst

This week sees the release of The Bravest Man in the Universe, the intriguing new record that teams iconic soul vocalist Bobby Womack with Damon Albarn and XL Records founder Richard Russell, both of whom handle production duties. It’s an intriguing proposition on paper, and on record, the results are thoroughly excellent listening. The intergenerational nature of the collaboration, which also features an unlikely duet with Lana Del Rey — and the news this week that John Cale is working with Danger Mouse — has got us thinking about other occasions when artists from different musical eras have gotten together and produced music to bridge the generation gap. Sometimes it works, and sometimes, well, it doesn’t. We’ve ranked a few of the most notable such collaborations from best to worst. Let us know what you think. … Read More

How Believable Is the Cast of the CBGB Movie?

People sure do love CBGB now that it doesn’t exist anymore, don’t they? Not only is a CBGB music festival coming to New York in July, but there’s also a movie called CBGB in the works, which focuses on its famous proprietor, the late Hilly Kristal, and the venue’s halcyon days in the ’70s. Over the past week or so, casting announcements have been trickling out, and they’re pretty intriguing. We didn’t quite picture Alan Rickman as Kristal, for example, but we’ve got faith that the man who brought us Snape will make a good effort at embodying the downtown icon. And it appears to be a stroke of genius to cast his Harry Potter colleague Rupert Grint as the Dead Boys’ fire-haired shit-starter Cheetah Chrome. But Malin Akerman as Debbie Harry? See the legends side-by-side with the actors who have been cast to play them after the jump, and let us know whether you think CBGB is getting it right. … Read More
