Slovakian artist Matej Kren‘s installation Scanner, currently on display in Italy at the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna, is like one of our bookworm childhood fantasies sprung to life: It’s a giant fort made out of thousands of books! Don’t you just want to crawl inside and look around a bit? Also, do you think it has that awesome musty old book smell? Click through for more images.

I dig this as a piece of high art. Definitely. Although, I need to kvetch that the designer ideas surrounding furniture made out of books only tells me that the owner is someone who doesn’t read. If you dig reading books, you don’t make a coffee table out of them.

[...] Literature as Environment In The Lighter Side of Writing on August 7, 2010 at 12:52 am I’ve been collecting books ever since my parents enrolled me in a book-of-the-month club when I was very young. Over the years, my collection has grown, which is a big hassle when it comes to moving. But the physical presence of my books comforts me. I can’t imagine living in a house without books. I enjoyed tele well, too, but I think this one is made of phone books. I’m not sure though; this page has yet to be translated from Czechoslovakian. To see more book structures, see Kren’s curriculum vitae and scroll to the bottom. To see larger photos, visit flavorwire.com. [...]
If you love books and reading, you can make a cathedral out of them and
crawl inside and live there, make your prayer a way of opening your mind
and soul to ideas. Just think of the world full of reflective people.

If you’re an avid reader, you can play the structure like Jenga: pulling out books here and there carefully so it doesn’t collapse.
My room already looks like this, only there are walls behind the stacks… I think…
