10 of Our Favorite Letterpress Studios

7

In a modern world where much of design is driven by new technology, the revival of letterpress printing — which fell out of vogue in the late ’50s thanks to offset lithography — might seem counterintuitive. Until you examine the worthwhile results. Charlotte Rivers’ Little Book of Letterpress offers readers a history of the traditional printing technique and an inside look at the time-consuming creation process, alongside a comprehensive guide to some of the coolest letterpress studios working today. We’ve rounded up 10 of our favorites after the jump, along with some examples of their goods.

I’d love to correct the pricing – the set of three notebooks is only $18. Thanks for the shout out!

Shelley @ Albertine Press

These are a few of the great letterpress companies, but to add a couple others are Elum Designs (for cards, journals, wrapping paper and stationery), Old Tom Foolery (for absolutely hilarious cards), St. Augustine Press (a.k.a. Page; for stationery) and B Designs (for beautifully understated stationery).

None of these that I’ve listed or that were listed prior can be found in any old store, but if you’re looking for something special, each one of these companies has it (I’ve seen almost all of these companies personally and fallen in love with each) check out your local stationery store, I would guess it’s likely they’ll have what you’re looking for!

Hatch Show Print in Nashville is the oldest working letterpress shop in the US. How you could miss Hatch is a mystery.

Agreed with Sarah on missing Hatch. It is a relic, THE shining star in the letterpress world. And next door in Knoxville, TN is Yee-Haw Industries – another gem and especially kooky.

(Let’s not forget in St Louis, MO there is The Firecracker Press.)

in florida, Mama’s Sauce (orlando) is where it’s at. fer sher.

Don’t forget Hammerpress!!! Kansas City, MO hammerpress.net

There are so many great letterpress studios that have risen over the years. I would like to mention Jonathan Wright & Company in Los Angeles. They do amazing custom work. Jonathan promotes many of the above mentioned shoppes as well as create his own ornate and witty designs. :)
